I don't know, but that's an interesting question. Dean tends to be pretty withdrawn and doesn't often offer his opinion on important matters.

three weeks pass...
Dear Steve Shasta,

I have had the Steely Dan song Bodhisattva in my head for almost a day, except where they say "Bodhisattva" is replaced with "Oh Steve Shasta." Thought you would like to know.

I keep saying "Brody Miller" all because of Steve Shasta.

All my best,

Hey dudes, after surviving the BLIZZARD OF 2006 I kept a pretty mellow weekend back here in Cali.

Some news for you guys though: I have given up surfing and skateboarding, I have found the light.

Dudes, wakeboarding.

Is there nothing so gnarly as to be towed behind a medium sized boat in a lake while you're just shredding up the wakes?

Already a legend, I hope to push the sport into the next sector of multimedia attention at the Pringles-Sour-Ranch Habanero-Mt.-Dew Almost Extreme Games coming this summer to Lake Havasu.

See you guys there,

Steve "Already a legend, Shasta's breed of wakeboarding demands..." Shasta

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Are there any wakeboarding videogames I might try? With the caveat that there is no substitue for the real thing.

I've always been sort of nervous of deep water in case a whale surfaces beneath me. I know that sounds irrational, but it is true.

Under the paving stones, Paul Scholes (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:11 (twenty years ago)

I can't talk to much about it but there is some radical news to be announced from Activision about St3v3 Sh@st@, Legendary Wakeboarder for the PSX.

Not on a wakeboard!

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I wake switch. My technique has been compared to Bob Burnqvist or Mickey Dora.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 21 February 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

Dear Wakeboarding Legend Steve Shasta,

Are you pissed off that Oneida ripped you offwhen they created their new label? Or do these sorts of things not phase you?

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

Bro,

Oneida brahs are on ILBaseball and that is all killer, no filler to me dude.

One love,

dear steve shasta: does a legendary wakeboarder enjoy a wahoo's fish taco?

i always wondered where my mandibula was! (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:16 (twenty years ago)

I just knew you would be cool with that brah

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

JBRah,

Dude, Fish Taco's are something I usually only reserve for Baja surf trips like K39, Puerto Escondido and Todos Santos but I don't think I've ever had a Wahoo's. When I was living in La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas I'd grub on Rubio's here and there but more out of desperation and student income.

Dude I remember one time Corky Carrol and I were...

Ah never mind dudes, way long story. Epic brews, killer waves, the kine maui wowie, irie times my brethren.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

obvs the last one is a joke, but it will all make sense when they start doing a Steve Shasta skit.

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 22 February 2006 21:42 (twenty years ago)

btw Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island made it onto SNL because of viral videos, blogging, and internet word of mouth. So no doubt they are reading the wisdom of Shasta at this very moment.

Dear Steve Shasta,

Do you have any upcoming endorsement deals or have you renounced worldly posessions in the name of Jah?

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I am truly stoked for all the attention I've received from such a rockin' internet poster such as yourself, but you really got to ask yourself one question in life: Can you aspire to the greatness of Bradley Nowell?

Steve Shasta, after eating too many carbs this weekend and getting sick I have come to realize the importance of diet in health. What would you suggest as good staple foods to keep my colonic health up?

-JW

xngnznevqnznplbetbarnpphzhyngbe (ex machina), Thursday, 23 February 2006 17:24 (twenty years ago)

JW,

I, like you, was once one young buck with a wild streak. But since many TM sessions and cultural reprogramming, I have found dietary harmony under the almighty influence of a macrobiotic diet. I have been a professional wakeboarder for 3 and a half years and I highly doubt that my unmatched skill for butterslides, heelside carves, and toeside 720s would be what it is without Verne Verona and his TRUTH.

Enjoy, this is my gift of love for each and everyone of you this year and every year until we meet the LION in the HEAVEN.

The cliff Bud Cort drove his car off at the end of Harold and Maude (dir: Hal Ashby, 1971)
L: 37 37'10.83"N
L: 122 29'51.64"W
This is a rocky cliff right next to Mori Point in Pacifica, CA, and is the cliff that Bud Cort drove his car off at the end of Harold and Maude. The place where the car landed is at the top of the long-ish, dark rocky patch right in the inside center of the curved-in part of the cliff (the tide is higher here than when the scene was shot).
GoogleEarth does weird things with "3-D" terrain (the cliff walls and water kind of melt into each other), but the hills to the right of this photo, where Cort walked away while playing his banjo, are fun to explore.

San Francisco Premiere
Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea
Dirs. Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer US 2005
"There was time when the Salton Sea, tucked into the southeast corner of California, was known as the Riviera of the West - a haven for jetsetters and vacationers. Originally created by accident, it\'s now one of the country\'s worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Still, a hardy few have hung on there, hoping for help to come along and restore the lake to its former glory. Congressman Sonny Bono himself was once dedicated to saving the lake. Eccentrics abound in this surreal landscape: the naked guy who waves to passing RVs\; the man who built his own holy mountain\; beer-loving Hungarian Hunky Daddy\; the guys who plan to get rich someday when this virtual sewer becomes a Riviera again. Hair-raising and hilarious, part history lesson, part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities you\'ve ever seen, this is the American Dream gone as stinky as a dead carp." - SF Docfest (71m)

Dear Adam,

Why do the Vengaboys make Ibiza seem like some kinda chilled out beach town instead of Ultradramaglam replete with rhinestone bikinis, gold lame chaps and oversized cowboy hats?

Steve Shasta

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Steve, sadly I can't speak for the Vengaboys.

You obviously know about more about Ibiza than me. Have you been? Are there cervezas and tasty waves?

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Bro, there is a left there, wait... I'm not sure I can talk about it. Dude, just go... just paddle out somewhere about 3km southwest of La Puerto Del Diablo. That's all I can say dude.

Dude, I heard this obnoxious Marina girl talking about "planning to fall into a K-hole tonight" on somewhat crowded public transit this morning.

I heard some gems recently in NYC but I forgot them, damn it!

Steve

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I made a rare trip on SF public transit the other day - I took the bus to eat at Burma Super Star, 4th & Clement.

How long did you wait in line?
