I prefer "clicky blinky things"

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Monday, 18 July 2016 14:40 (nine years ago)

they're kind of a sore subject with me because i dated someone who would get annoyed that i overused them. like, pulling out of the driveway i put them on out of habit even though no one could possibly be behind me.

Treeship, Monday, 18 July 2016 14:42 (nine years ago)

you should have adopted a genuinely irritating and very out of character habit, like chain smoking with the car windows rolled up

mh, Monday, 18 July 2016 14:44 (nine years ago)

btw TS's previous post is vvmic

how could someone get annoyed with 'overuse', are you expected to check all around in case there's no-one there or no pedestrian about to come round the corner before you use them? No, you make it a fucking habit and do it all the time so people don't have to second-guess what idiotic drivers are doing grrr grr non-use of indicators is one of my biggest pet peeves

kinder, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:35 (nine years ago)

otm and idiot drivers who signal one way and then go the other. that must be some kind of dyslexia right bc it's not that hard to remember which way to flick the fucking thing

Mordy, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:36 (nine years ago)

yeah that was my thinking, kinder.

Treeship, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:39 (nine years ago)

when you think no ones there is exactly the time blinkers are most valuable

lag∞n, Monday, 18 July 2016 20:54 (nine years ago)

i am moved by the outpouring of support

Treeship, Monday, 18 July 2016 21:00 (nine years ago)

Moved in which direction? It's sad we'll never know

kinder, Monday, 18 July 2016 22:00 (nine years ago)

Was gonna ask how/why you signal exiting a driveway but realized you're probably one of those AAA backer-upper commando savages

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 00:00 (nine years ago)

of course you signal leaving the driveway. most driveways give you at least two exit options, so you signal to let people know what you intend to do. even if you only had one choice, you'd still signal, to distinguish yourself from someone just sitting in a car waiting for life to happen. plus kinder otm. you signal no matter what cuz it's an excellent habit for a driving person to have. harrumph for emphasis. boy this really steams me up.

i was always taught to call 'em "clickers" as in "okay, put your clicker on"

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:04 (nine years ago)

how is using a turn signal to indicate that you're backing up "letting people know whar you intend to do"? i have just never seen anybody do this, sorry

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:12 (nine years ago)

they're turn signals, not "i'm doing something" signals. go ahead, sb away

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:13 (nine years ago)

what sort of driveway doesn't require a turn when backing out?

chinavision!, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)

the driveway in question isn't one where you back out. you drive out front first.

Treeship, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:27 (nine years ago)

i just don't know who you're signaling to. if it's a car that's going to be right behind you, i don't know what information signaling is supposed to convey. if it's cars/people behind you, a turn signal is not conveying any information to them about your backing up. information!!

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:28 (nine years ago)

xp ok fine, you're cool, we're done here

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:28 (nine years ago)

that was the point. it wasn't necessay; just out of habit. that's why the person in question would gently chide me about it.

Treeship, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:29 (nine years ago)

there are turn signals on the front of the car too fyi

clickers goddammit

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:40 (nine years ago)

A clicker is a thing you use to change the tv channel or open your garage door

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:45 (nine years ago)

turn signals tick, they don't click

mh, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:48 (nine years ago)

the difference between tick and click is that tick is a tiny woodland arthropod of the order acarina, while click is a brief, sharp, not particularly loud, relatively high-pitched sound produced by the impact something small and hard against something hard, such as by the operation of a switch, a lock or a latch, or a finger pressed against the thumb and then released to strike the hand

nomar, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:51 (nine years ago)

anyway that's what all the drivers ed instructors called it

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 19:53 (nine years ago)

I can't remember what any of them said other than "DON'T DO THAT" and "YOU NEED TO STOP"

mh, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 20:00 (nine years ago)

why wouldn't you signal out of a driveway? How many driveways launch you directly into the direction of travel? Your car has to turn in a direction as you enter the roadway.

Sean, let me be clear (silby), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 20:01 (nine years ago)

usually i'd be pulling out onto an empty road though. sometimes i would signal when like, entering a cul-de-sac. there were cases in which it wasn't warranted.

Treeship, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)

There's never harm done by indicating (unless you do it wrong) but there can be harm done by not indicating if there's someone there you didn't see. It just makes sense to indicate every time.

AlanSmithee, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 20:28 (nine years ago)

how to decide which side indicator to use, coin flip?

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:17 (nine years ago)

nevermind nevermind nevermind let's end this derail now

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:17 (nine years ago)

... You use the indicator that's in the direction you are turning? what an odd question

http://porno (DJP), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:18 (nine years ago)

what the hell is an indicator?

nomar, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

like, there's no point to indicating you are making a turn unless you are making a turn, regardless of whether you are moving forwards or backwards

I am confused as to what information you think people are attempting to impart here

http://porno (DJP), Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

mh, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:21 (nine years ago)

i need visual aids

so i guess (u.s. perspective)

- you're in a driveway perpendicular to the road you're backing/turning into

- you're signaling to the car that will be behind you once you turn

got it. or kill me, i am stupid :(

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

oh man i get it now. so embarassed

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:26 (nine years ago)

this may be related to my difficulty in GTA w/r/t turning backwards in the intended direction

brimstead, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:27 (nine years ago)

technically if you parked with the rear of the vehicle to the garage, my childhood driveway was like this, as there was a road straight across from it. but then again I never parked like that.

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 19 July 2016 21:59 (nine years ago)

- you're signaling to the car that will be behind you once you turn

exactally. though when i use my blinky thingy, i figure the most important audience is the person i've somehow completely failed to notice, whoever they might be and whatever direction they might be traveling in.
