tried out dds.wmv's I'll Try Living Like This and I thought it was great. Vaporwave is oftentimes such an empty promise and there's just so much of it out there, but this album (on first listen) feels like the real deal, freaked me the hell out in a few spots (and it samples Susumu Hirasawa, and therefore automatically gets my thumbs up)

Saint Pepsi - Hit Vibes is another good one. Sounds like what Daft Punk's RAM really should've been. Something you could actually play at a party, how about that?

Thus far my favorite vape thing is "Death 2 Snitches", a collab between Nmesh and Viper the Rapper, who is (you could argue) an originator of vaporwave. I guess it's not really a collab, Nmesh just paypalled the dude 35 bucks for a verse and then tweaked the hell out of it. Wound up not finishing it because Viper turned out to be a seriously strange and dishonest dude that he didn't want to be associated with. But the demo version still totally rules:

That death's dynamic shroud.wmv album is amazing...

It certainly is punk of the Church of England to think that way (tangenttangent), Thursday, 9 June 2016 11:11 (ten years ago)

the Saint Pepsi sound seems to be the road taken for vaporwave artists not going full ambient (see also Android Apartment above), cf this comp from Future Society:

https://futuresocietycollective.bandcamp.com/album/single-series-volume-i

(curiously, Saint Pepsi artist himself seems to have gone into Neon Indian territory afterward...)

the death's dynamic shround.wmv album does become amazing at some point halfway through track 5, and stays amazing thereafter

the comments on that video are perhaps the most annoying comments i've read all year. as if whatever the fuck those commentors are producing is somehow more valuable to the cultural landscape than mtv's vapor pastiche

lol co-option

pandit pran nathalie (sanskrit), Wednesday, 27 July 2016 18:16 (nine years ago)

yeah I totally welcome this stuff becoming more mainstream and think it already kinda is. it was definitely amusing checking out the comments for the original "It's Your Move" vid and seeing how nearly all of them mention vaporwave

frogbs, Wednesday, 27 July 2016 18:19 (nine years ago)

Nmesh - Dream Sequins is pretty cool. sounds like an early-90's Orb album but instead of going for obscurity with the samples he's trying to bring out forgotten memories from people born in the 80's...kinda freaked out hearing the Land Before Time advert in there. I had a VHS with that on it and heard it dozens of times. any of his other stuff worth a listen?

frogbs, Thursday, 28 July 2016 16:48 (nine years ago)

also fucking lol at the last track on this thing

highly recommended (if you're into this kinda stuff) : Nmesh's massive Welcome to Warp Zone! mixtape, featuring 100+ tracks from 90's video games, plus snippets of dialogue, commercials, news reports, and I think even an original composition or two (plus, half a minute of "Horse With No Name" for no reason whatsoever). spans 4:20 (lol) but it's incredibly addictive - think Donkey Kong Country, Link to the Past, Earthbound...though I only recognize about a quarter of it. great stuff.

marcos, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 17:28 (nine years ago)

brimstead, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 18:49 (nine years ago)

There's like 3 types of vaporwave - Eccojams (Chuck Person, Macintosh Plus), Sega Saturn Menu/Abandoned in the Hypermall/Weather Channel BGM (Laserdisc Visions, James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual), and Future Funk/Seapunk/Whatever the fuck (Saint Pepsi, Blank Banshee, most of what came out past 2012). People argue on Reddit a lot about it. Like IDM or Prog, most of the good vaporwave artists don't like being called vaporwave.

Can we say that being prolific might be a characteristic of this genre?

calstars, Wednesday, 24 August 2016 23:39 (nine years ago)

It definitely can be -- telepath and his alias Virtual Dream Plaza has put 100 "albums" since 2013! Since most of this stuff is based on ambient drone and samples, I think it can be very easy to create (especially for kids w/a lot of free time and expendable/parental income). Not all artists are like this obv.

Dominique, Thursday, 25 August 2016 16:14 (nine years ago)

the funny thing about Vektroid being so prolific and working under so many different aliases is that she practically singlehandedly made Vaporwave seem like it was a burgeoning genre with a bench of up and coming artists. when in reality is was just one person, who had only just turned 20 years old.

Throwing Coppice Halifax in here too

I really like his EP pacific opal hex: https://wil-ru.bandcamp.com/album/pacific-opal-hex

calstars, Thursday, 25 August 2016 18:51 (nine years ago)

Maybe he's just ambient, not vaporwave. Apologies...

calstars, Thursday, 25 August 2016 18:52 (nine years ago)

yeah Coppice Halifax does some nice reverb-y "lofi" boards of canada xeroxy stuff. not amazing or anything but i like its crap amateurish-ness much better than slicked up BoC lovers like freescha/casino vs japan etc
