It's not so much who wins, it's how you play the game.

why do you like Japanese things so much?
what size jeans are you?
who would win in a fight: james bond or conan?

Gygax!:
Do you just hate me because of the whole ILBaseball kerfuffle? Or was there something else I did/said before that that pissed you off? Or do you just not like me in general?
Also, do you think I will get made fun of for asking the above questions?
Love, Nick

a) I love the Boredoms, Japanese food, and my friends in Japan. Other than a few other things like techgeek/neat videogames it's like maybe 1/10th of the passion you have for something like pot, you know?
b) In shrink to fit jeans I wear size 34x36 which shrink down to about 32x34.
c) Sean Connery as Bond, a predictable choice I know.

n/a:

i don't "hate" you. just a bit of fun, let's be cool.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

how can i tell if jeans are shrink to fit or not? often i buy jeans expecting them to shrink and they don't, which is a problem.

1. When are we finally going to Volton properly?

2. You have much knowledge. Did you find it in the glowing Pulp Fiction suitcase or are you just a superefficient googler?

3. What is ddb's deal? Do I know him? Shit got feisty w me and his boy cutty but now I have no beef w cutty (he has a 'natural stoner' face that's why) but ddb's still fronting like I'm some NKOTB that HIS ass has got enough clout to make go away!

Volton? Michael Volton?

2. You have much knowledge. Did you find it in the glowing Pulp Fiction suitcase or are you just a superefficient googler?

It's all google.

3. What is ddb's deal? Do I know him? Shit got feisty w me and his boy cutty but now I have no beef w cutty (he has a 'natural stoner' face that's why) but ddb's still fronting like I'm some NKOTB that HIS ass has got enough clout to make go away!

it's like robert duvall and sean penn in colors. cutty wants to run down the hill and fuck some of the heifers whereas ddb prefers to walk down and fuck them all one at a time.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 18 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

1. Crap I meant Voltron! But on second thought that whole concept of Voltronning is extremely homoerotic and corporate-coggish - men joining body parts to be part of a larger body which may be destroyed in combat.

2. I'm talking about baseball!

3. Luda uses the same line on his new one but he says cows instead. What a sexist! I usually take the any friend of gax is auto-rad approach but I don't know why ddb wanna be starting something. I only want to bring love like green-glow Mr. Burns. I'd like to make peace w DDB but only if he treats me like the special little lady I am.

Yes! Very distinctive sound. Any guesses on the amp? Sounds too bright to me to be a Fender.
-- Tim Ellison (timelliso...), March 19th, 2005 6:26 PM. (Tim Ellison) (admin) (userip)

Tim, have you ever heard that Rapture song on their album I think called "Love is all..."? They do a pretty good job of replicating this tone that you're inquiring about.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:04 (twenty years ago)

I just listened to it! It's breaking up a little bit more, but U R right.

See, ddb? Strats are cool.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 00:51 (twenty years ago)

Born in the fifties, lookin' so bold, Fender Stratocaster
Everything your parents hated about rock and roll, Fender Fender Fender
Twanging that twang and sounding so tough, Fender Stratocaster
And the kids in my corner they can't get enough, Fender Fender Fender

Like the wind in your hair when the top is down
Like taillights headin' for another town
Fender Stratocaster
Well there's something about that sound

Like gasoline in the sand, Fender Stratocaster
Like a motorcycle at a hotdog stand, Fender Fender Fender
Like a Dunkin Donuts in Mattapan, Fender Stratocaster
Like a Thrifty Drugs in Santa An*, Fender Fender Fender

Oh the sound is thin and the sound is cheap
Like a tin can falling on a dead-end street
Fender Stratocaster
Well there's something about that sound

Well how can it sound so tough, Fender Stratocaster
And it's made to be treated rough, Fender Fender Fender
It's got the ancient Egyptian script, Fender Stratocaster
It's got the wang box from the crypt, Fender Fender Fender

Oh you shoulda known it right off the bat
One look and you know it would sound like that
Fender Stratocaster...

[modulate!]

Oh the sound so thin that it's barely there
Like a bitchy girl who just don't care, Fender Stratocaster
Like WooWoo Ginsberg at the jukebox joint
You hear the sound and you get the point
Fender Stratocaster
Well there's something about that sound

Oh all right
Oh I said oh my God
One more time
Ohhhh....

[NOTE: Second musical interlude includes a riff from "Let's Go Trippin'," a song by Dick Dale, king of surf guitar, one of the prime movers in using Fender Strats with new Fender amps to get that "wet sound". Also, Mattapan is a Boston-area town, and WooWoo Ginsberg was a Boston-area DJ in the sixties, *Santa An' being short for Santa Ana, the largest city in Orange County, California.]

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 01:04 (twenty years ago)

Steve,

Hey, do you think it would be sick, brah, if I started playing Strat through a Roland Jazz Chorus or something? Maybe adding some flange or chorus? You can't get the full range of eighties retro sticking to tube amps all the time.

Tim

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I have a 70s Roland Chorus copy that I use mostly for synths, but it's a good sound for a strat too, esp. super clean and nasally octave-chord licks like some smooth-jazz cat might lay down.

tell us the one about the jewess!

adamrl (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 05:15 (twenty years ago)

She was the daughter of a rabbi, with shockingly blonde hair and cute little cheeks. For some reason we ended up at the same, lame southern california uni known for sciences. She made the first moves as I had designs on her roommate, who had a long-distance boyfriend at Stanford. We dated for about a quarter, which translates to abou 3 months on a semester calendar. Her mother served dinner on china plates with the Japanese "Hokusai" print all over them. A quick google shows that she's teaching English in Israel and still using her maiden name, whatever that means.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Thank you, that was an enlightening and detailed and strangely mawkish gift.

Tony Harrison (ddb), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I forget if the weredophin is M@tt or No3lla... but it would definitely be one of those guys, maybe both. Real good people, good Oakland people.

But one is Nashville now, father of two big kids, posts on the Noize board, great style and a serious role-model. The other one lets me park my vehicle at her home when I go away for a while (which is pretty fucking nice if I don't mind saying so myself!) Kinda kooky, but I think that's why I was in love with her for 3 years until about the turn of the century (the real one, not the Y2K bullshit one), I could be wrong here I can't remember when we broke up specifically for some reason right now.

So.... Both are skilled chefs which you'd probably never gather from initial impressions. They've also both lived in Florida for some time which adds tremendous credibility to both of their were-dolphin status. But both also have secret crushes on J0hn Dwy3r AND Ch@ngoogle M@rsh@ll which I'll never forgive either of them for (although I myself have a thing for Ch@nnykins not that I'd ever admit that to you creeps).

Love,
Steve Shasta

Dude,

Is this Tony "Barrelsome" Harrison?

Fuck bro, last week: epic session at Todos Santos brah... Triple overhead, I took off on this one peak so late, a complete freefall down the face, I pulled it off and now I'm thinking oh shit this mother's gonna close out on me but I pull this sickly insane bottom turn out of my ass and made it out of that sketchy session and I just massacred that fucker, two hard carves and then a pumping off the top, full-on vintage 1985 Curren stylee.

See for yourself in next month's SURFER.

The name's Steve Shasta dudes.
