If you would like scholarly references, then I can't accommodate you, because I am not a scholar. I read whatever interests me, about a book a week, and I've been doing it for decades. I don't keep the texts and I don't take notes. I seek no more than to gratify my curiosity about the world. I've read a variety of source material that include firsthand narratives by whites -- mostly engaged in the fur trade -- who were in early contact with native north americans. but I can't cite them for you chapter and verse.

Every time we walked into town to get last-minute things from the shops or visit the pub, C and I kept nominating candidates for Townie of the Year 2015 (sample contestant: the thin, methy woman in Wilko with grey skin, two-tone platinum/berry hair, a Puffa jacket, Uggs and a huge Sports Direct bag). Chippenham has some AMAZING townies. Chippenham seems also to be home to a solitary freaked-out and hung-over Glaswegian we met in the queue at Costa Coffee (needs must) who expressed incredulity at the number of people walking around 'who look like they'd chib ye'.

Even if the person who said that were 90 years old today, he would have been 15 years old in 1940. So, obviously, his memories of how bad the Great Depression were would be, at best, the memories of a child who never had to deal with the adult reality of that time.
