big fan of lex but I always wonder what in his mind distinguishes comedy from attempted comedy, or "comedy", or attempted "comedy". Especially the times where he uses the quotation marks AND describes it as a failed attempt. What would that even mean? And if you hate all comedy anyway, surely such distinctions are pointless?

my 1st thought when I read that was, hang on, nobody tries to be quote-unquote funny, they try to be actually funny and end up at quote-unquote funny (ie unfunny). I don't know why but stuff like that always nags at me, like when people describe something as "sub-x" when they actually mean "about the same as x, which I hate"

i don't get it. films have proven again and again and again that we'll enjoy the company of/sympathize with all kinds of sickos if the film broadly aligns us with them. i recall one such film, i think it was called "the man who drove a taxi" or something. there's also really no big moral conundrum to finding the leisure activities of a bunch of assholes compelling to watch and thinking they should really be in prison.
