OK let's do this. My ilxwebmail goes to some long-dead account, so I'm gonna send you a webmail from my real e-mail address, then you reply, then I'll use that addy for the loan, cool?
You can loan eligible Kindle books to a friend from the Manage Your Kindle page.
During the loan period, you will not be able to read the book that you loaned.
Visit Manage Your Kindle. In the Actions menu, select Loan this title. If Loan this title is not an option, lending is unavailable for the title. Enter the recipient's e-mail address. If desired, enter a personal message.
Note: Be sure to send the Kindle book loan notification to your friend's personal e-mail address and not their Kindle e-mail address. Click Send now.

Eh fuck it falls into the "lending is unavailable for the title" category. Sorry :(

it's ok my webmail is an old address too. we would have been stuck in limbo.

harbl have you seen the NY article on BCDC yet? It is U&K that I discuss with you. We can do it in person, even. Preferably not at the BCDC.
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 21:19 (ten years ago) link
yes. i felt a little bit let down by it because i had already read all the stories about it and indictments so it didn't add anything new for me. i wish they had gotten someone local to write it. i have been in the bcdc & central booking a lot. i was even visiting the day the big news came out!
― flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:03 (ten years ago) link
iirc i was not really successful at visiting that day because of their arbitrary metal detector policies and underwire undergarment fail
― flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:06 (ten years ago) link
yeah I'm guessing there was stuff in the WaPo about the indictments, but I was away and missed all of that. Trying to get my head around "[female] CO had [consensual BUT NOT RILLY] sex with [male] inmate, has baby, rolling on working as CO" thing. It's such a reversal of what I think of as "non-consensual" sex--like, the CO + inmate thing, with female (who under other situations would be considered totally consenting) having sex with man (who under under other situations would be considered totally consenting) is not in situation with female CO sexually assaulting male inmate why because that's how this stuff is legally defined? And the pregnancies, etc. . .
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:22 (ten years ago) link
um that could have used an edit, but hopefully you get my meaning. I mean the sitch would be different WOULD IT NOT were it male COs with female inmates, oh I think so.
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:24 (ten years ago) link
haha i am having difficulty understanding the question
― flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 22:56 (ten years ago) link
Yeah that made no sense, sorry. Question is: "Do we treat Male CO having sex with Female Inmate differently than we do Female CO having sex with Male Inmate Y/N"?
I think Y, when both say it was consensual, which legally (iirc) is not even possible because there cannot be (legal) "consent" in a CO/inmate sitch.
― mom tossed in kimchee (quincie), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:12 (ten years ago) link
my response to this question feels complicated
― flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:27 (ten years ago) link
so it would be completely different if it was male COs and female inmates (i am 100% sure that that is something that happens in the women's jail as well, by consenting and non-consenting parties), but it cannot be compared to this situation by substitution. there are too many factors. it is a crime in maryland for a CO to have sex with an inmate. i don't think it's true that inmates--male or female--cannot ever consent. i think that was certainly a concern in making it illegal, but the bigger problem for people who make laws is that it's a crime against the administration of the jail, because you would get into this cycle of behavior where the COs have no power over the inmates. COs are supposed to have power over inmates, so in the ideal jail, sex between them would not be consensual. if COs are not successful in showing authority over inmates (as happened here), they might have consensual sex. if COs and inmates are having consensual sex, it's like they aren't even COs anymore. i don't feel capable of thinking about this in black and white, i guess.
― flatizza (harbl), Sunday, 27 April 2014 23:36 (ten years ago) link
Yeah I think you have put--very astutely and with a lot more first-hand knowledge than I have--the complication! I mean it comes down to way bigger institutional realities, which is: what do you expect from your corrections professionals and is that reasonable given who you hire and what you pay those folks and the context in which you hire the (i.e. ppl who know each other from growing up in the same [challenging] neighborhood).

My friend's studio is right across the street from the collapse (you can see the building in the pic amon posted) and I've parked on that side of the street a million times. Last time, 2 weeks ago, the street had slid down so much that my car was at like a 45 degree angle.

He also said urban casinos could "prey" on a city's poor, who can least afford risking their money. Rawlings-Blake bristles at the notion.
"I think there's a tendency for people to think we have to substitute our judgment for that of poor residents," she said. "They are aware of their financial obligations and what they can afford."
The mayor said she is satisfied that sufficient measures are in place to help problem gamblers, and that the city has sufficient "high-quality hotels, many a short distance away from the casino" to attract high rollers.
