btw darragh, don't think i'm knocking being a tourist (or quietly poking around the big city), I've basically made it a second career and thoroughly endorse it.

max otm go to dallas instead

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:52 (twelve years ago)

Above 14th st. is not all that much fun to wander around imo unless you just like tall buildings. Of course there are many institutions and museums and parks worth visiting. But areas like LES, West Village, East Village, Chinatown are more fun to roam.

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:09 (twelve years ago)

no to mention which days they're closed, I was planning to go to PS1 today to see the Mike Kelley thing but they're closed Tues and Weds. oops.

dmr, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:13 (twelve years ago)

moma is free friday evenings, new museum thursday evenings, amnh and the met are always technically "free"

max, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Guggenheim has a few free hours on Saturdays - I found lines down and around the block last time I did this, might have just been people into the dumb James Turrell thing, or it might always be like that. Guggenheim is really expensive though so that can almost be worth it.

hang son doong (am0n), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 18:32 (twelve years ago)

, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:18 (twelve years ago)

I don't love Mike Kelley, but if you do I'd imagine it's a good show, being that it's the largest ever and the first comprehensive one in a couple decades

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:30 (twelve years ago)

and the images look pretty nice. Plus PS1 is always worth the trip just to enjoy the space and to eat at M Wells Dinette.

signed, J.P. Morgan CEO (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 15 January 2014 16:31 (twelve years ago)

I didn't have strong feelings about Kelley, but the show was impressive. Didn't realize the breadth of his work. Almost the entire first floor is devoted to his recreations of the city of Kandor from Superman. There are other pieces, like this one huge sculpture upstairs, that are amazing.

M Wells Dinette is great but be careful if you're not too adventurous an eater. Last time we went the options were pretty limited and I decided to roll the dice on a Goat Tagine Terrine. Despite HATING gelatinous foods, I thought I'd man up and give it a shot since nothing else seemed up my alley and I figured I could handle it. I was wrong. It was like 10% goat meat and 90% terrine, solidified goat fat. I thought the ratio would be different. Sure, it tasted great once I stopped gagging.

The time I went before that I had one of the best meals I've had in years, so who knows.

While it may not be the first choice of things to do, you can take the 7 train in the direction opposite of Manhattan and go to the Queens Museum and see the panaroma of New York. Then you can say you saw the WHOLE city. They also have good permanent exhibits on the World's Fair and Tiffany glass, in addition to the contemporary international stuff. And outside is the actual worlds fair stuff which is pretty cool to see. The unisphere etc. Then go to Flushing for food. Or stop in Jackson Heights on the way back.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 15 January 2014 18:29 (twelve years ago)

i have found m wells dinette to be very hit or miss and very expensive.
