Is there an English neighborhood?

Or a Scottish one, or Welsh?

There is cool stuff in Queens though! As an archi-tourist I maybe favor weird buildings and things that nobody else would care about. But for example I had a great afternoon a couple months ago, traipsing around Forest Hills Gardens (early 20th century garden suburb, nice planning, lovely "town square" moment, and just one super-cute super-expensive house after another - improbably not gated), and then on to Forest Park, which is exactly what it says in the name: trees, lots of 'em. Plus hills. One of the more "out of the city" moments I've had here. With the autumn colors going, it really felt like growing up in Georgia and going on a nature hike at the state park or something. I still need to hit up Flushing Meadows.

And of course LIC has PS1, Museum of the Moving Image, Socrates Sculpture Park, the Noguchi Museum... and on the way, check out Roosevelt Island, both for the aerial tram ride over the river, and for the (sadly incomplete) late 1960s idea of a new Brutalist "main street." Love that place. Here's to Queens!

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:14 (twelve years ago)

how come ny irish bars are fratboy hellholes and boston irish bars are just ordinary neighborhood places, its counterintuitive

lag∞n, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:15 (twelve years ago)

the ny irish bars in queens don't have any fratboys they just have scary 60 y/o irish dudes

iatee, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah was thinking maybe its cause of the presence of irish people in boston that does it

lag∞n, Monday, 13 January 2014 16:17 (twelve years ago)

FoHi Gardens really is worth seeing if you're already in the area. I don't know if I'd make a trip to Queens just for that on a trans-atlantic visit to NYC, but if you're looking for interesting out-of-the way stuff you could always do that and combine it with a meal at the Michelin-rated Danny Brown, or the more casual but very good Nick's Pizza.

Forest Park is also neat because at first it seems like a more badly maintained Prospect Park, but then it has actual nature/light hiking trails that really make you feel outside the city.

And I do think a trip to Flushing is worthwhile for the food and atmosphere.

Or a Scottish one, or Welsh?

I don't know specifics of Scottish immigration besides my own family's anecdata, but it's never seemed like Scots tended to gather in any partic area that I've heard of (besides the Appalachians).

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 13 January 2014 17:10 (twelve years ago)

Iirc my forbears were weavers and spread out into mill towns in the Northeast and from there into coal mines, but didn't stay centered around NYC.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Monday, 13 January 2014 17:12 (twelve years ago)

Scots ppl dont gather they amass iirc, more than three scottish ppl is known as a 'mob' and it is for fear of meeting such that we irish roam in clannish packs ourselves

Re: Queens for transatlantic tourists, again i think it all depend how long the visit is for...if you have three days in NYC, no, but maybe if you're around for a week? Nice to see other parts of the city. I always feel like if I just show people things in Manhattan, they can kind of come away having no idea how the city actually works or where most people live, etc.

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 January 2014 19:17 (twelve years ago)

You...you're staying in LIC? I mean...okay. Is there more stuff there than I remember that isn't just high-rises?

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:38 (twelve years ago)

I guess if you're going to hang out in Greenpoint, which has a lot of nice things, you can get a car back to LIC easily. And there must be more stuff in LIC than when I used to go there, but at least it'll always have LIC Bar.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:43 (twelve years ago)

There's not much to do in LIC but it's easy to get around from there at least. There's been some development on the north side of Queens Plaza, with M Wells Steakhouse which is probably worth a visit. If you like the ethnic foods take trains out to Elmhurst, Flushing and Jackson Heights. Otherwise, hope the G train is running.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:50 (twelve years ago)

LIC is very good for getting into Manhattan, that's why all those people live there.

mizzell, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:51 (twelve years ago)

It's good for getting into Midtown, not that anyone who doesn't work there wants to go there but you can transfer to anything obv.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:56 (twelve years ago)

LIC makes some sense to me - pretty unexciting and blah in itself, but well-connected by transit, and just enough "there" that you can sort of survive, find breakfast, etc. (Though the more pleasant spots in LIC for this are further south, where you can see trees in Google satellite view. You also get a kind of weird 'ta-da, New York!' experience through a walk along Queensboro Plaza, with the elevated train piling up overhead, the cheap-as-dirt shops lining up to the sides - and then shiny towers in the mid-ground and the contemporary landscape project at 41st Ave. Again, not going to be a #1 sight in New York for most people. The closest area of contiguous "neighborhood cuteness" would be Greenpoint - good Polish food, and looooots of yuppie/hipster establishments, some of which will be quite delicious and satisfying.)

The G for Greenpoint and Williamsburg, and the E, 7, N and Q for everything in Manhattan.

My first trip to NYC I stayed in a hostel on the UWS, which was similarly not so "happening" (though maybe prettier, I guess) but a much longer trek from doing fun things.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:56 (twelve years ago)

Midtown also good for various things tourists want to do, not knowing enough about darraghmac - MOMA, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park, and all them tall buildings! Two stops from LIC with the M or the E, very little fuss.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 14:59 (twelve years ago)

Free shuttle to manhattan, the fabled MANHATTAN of my darling golem's scribbled primary instruction.

Also we are v quiet and boring really, i mean we'll likely just nap most days.

is this semi-amateurism? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:01 (twelve years ago)

All true! Lol this is like that thing were I was in a room of other NYers the other day and no one had ever been to the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:02 (twelve years ago)

That was an xp btw, I am not necessarily otming darra's protestations of boringness.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:02 (twelve years ago)

Ur all too jaded cant u see that journeying around NEW YORK will be an adventure in itself

But yeah touristy stuff etc ease of getting around and all that, also place seemed reasonable and quite nice, what have you

is this semi-amateurism? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:04 (twelve years ago)

I am boring but in a v amusing personable kinda way, im ok with this, fully expect other ilxors to provide the interest while i mutter pointed asides (note this didnt work with estela as we both just kept muttering)

is this semi-amateurism? (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:06 (twelve years ago)

I finally went up in the Empire State like a year ago. never done statue of liberty, no (unless looking at it from the Staten Island Ferry counts)

dmr, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:27 (twelve years ago)

what kinds of things are you guys planning on doing dmac, museums, sights, shopping, food

max, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:39 (twelve years ago)

Empire State actually is kind of fun for the view, also the camp of the audio guide, Tony, a composite of six real and fictitious cabbies. ''Ah...da Brooklyn Bridge. My fadda, he used to pay a nickel ta...''

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:41 (twelve years ago)

i went to go to the Empire State build once and it was so expensive so we gave up

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:43 (twelve years ago)

btw darragh, don't think i'm knocking being a tourist (or quietly poking around the big city), I've basically made it a second career and thoroughly endorse it.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:43 (twelve years ago)

some of the best manhattan views are in LIC for what its worth

chinavision!, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:44 (twelve years ago)

windows on the world was the best (rip) cause u cld go up there for free and get a drink and gaze out upon the majesty and lol at the fools who waited in line to pay to go up in the other tower

lag∞n, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:45 (twelve years ago)

you can also catch the east river ferry downtown, which is fun.

chinavision!, Tuesday, 14 January 2014 15:45 (twelve years ago)
