I wish George Michael came to my work. And I work from home.
Man, is something serious going around? I keep asking my girlfriend why she's been stuffing cotton balls up my nose and down my throat while I sleep every day for the last two weeks. I thought it was allergies untill one night last week when I started sweating and shivering at the same time, then went to bed and had really strange dreams and woke up with the sheets all off the mattress. I've been taking a little claritan, a little sudafed, a little of that stuff they use to replace sudafed, lots of tylenol, orange juice, tea, and I still feel like a truck ran me over.
Another good friend didn't make it last night because of a "head cold".

Laurel, did you really refer to Chinese medicine as "kooky?" 'Cause that's like what they use in China and people do get sick there. I find it to be a much more holistic way of looking at ailments. Very in depth, too. From my experience, western medicine is often stuck in treating symptoms rather than root causes of things.

what a tard
I was supposed to DJ this friday at 200 Orchard but they lost their liquor license so the party's been moved last minute to Studio B. So what do you get when you put 4 totally overexposed local DJs in one of brooklyn's larger dance music venues? THE BEST TIME EVER! Please come and spread the word. I've got new records. And old ones.

Ooo nice!
When are you going on, Dan?
― BleepBot, Thursday, 8 November 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)
I have no idea, but I should get a decent billing. There will probably be some tag-teaming as well, I had a great time djing with Jacques back during the Studio B pre-opening after the Black Dice/Oneida show.
― dan selzer, Thursday, 8 November 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)
i even danced to that
― bb, Thursday, 8 November 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)
last night was AWESOME. It was dead for a while and I figured nobody would come because of the rain but we had an almost full dancefloor (which is BIG at Studio B) and we rocked it. Y'all missed out.

HAY DAN: got a Photoshop/prinitng question far ya. I'm prepping a three color print job for a LP label / cd face. In the black and white layer, can I assume the printer will print the white as clear? Or do I need to cut out the white? If so, is there a quick way to do that? This is a b/w photo set at %50 opacity.

I kind of understand what you're asking but not totally sure.
In general, there isn't any such thing as white in photoshop or quark/indesign, white is really absence of image, or "knocked-out", therefore the paper shows through. When preparing artwork for CDs, say you want black type on a white CD, you have to make a plate called "white" and also ask for the CD Flood White, print to center. That will coat the CD with white first before laying down the black type image or any other colors. Actually, you should always flood white first even if you're printing different colors, that way all following colors are printing on ink instead of partially on ink and partially on the CD.
A good way to test this type of stuff out is to print seperations, then you'll get each color layer printed as a solid black image and you can better see what will happen.
And for the above, I'm not sure if the flood white has to count as one of your colors of the 3 color job. That's only for the CD though, it's not a problem with the LP label so long as the label's paper is white.
If you ever need to, there are complicated ways of seperating the black from white in a BW image using various photoshop selection tools, then saving the selections onto different layers of a multichannel document.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
thanks, dan. that answers my question. hopefully I won't need to get complicated with a tool tool. --flood white usually counts. the SD disc came out black on silver because I didn't realize that.
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)
and Print To Center is good, don't think they charge extra for that, but that's when the color goes all the way to the little hole in the middle.
I've generally gone in the direction of making the CD art as simple as possible. If you print a normal 4 color image, because the linescreen is so course, it ends up looking really crappy. A BW image should fair better but you're still getting a relatively courser linescreen.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)
I've only used four color labels for the AlterN vinyl, but you're right it comes out dark n shitty. I usually use hard-line minimal flat color design. I'm hoping using %50 opacity on this b/w photo will mellow things out. (image is a yellow full moon, btw)
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)
The linescreen for vinyl labels should be fine, it was CDs that suffer. If stuff looks dark n shitty on vinyl labels it's probably because you're printing on uncoated stock instead of coated and there's all kinds of issues there with ink density and whatnot.
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)
it's Bl4ck D1ce that suffer for this kind of shit, y'know.
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)
the guy who does a lot of their production knows what he's doing...a lot of what it comes down to is everything has to be done on the cheap. You know how much money real companies spend on this shit? The cost of one proof printed at any of the places I've worked at is half the entire budget for an independent record label releasing a CD!
― dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)
It's no slight on r0b, it's just their texture-heavy collage stuff always looks like crap on cd face and LP.
― sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:00 (eighteen years ago)
like I said, it's best to keep the CD face simple. On the Prefects CD there's a 4c image but is' kinda abstract. Everything else I've done is pretty flat. It's also nearly impossible to match the color printing on the CD to colors used in the insert, so I often go for something contrasting. Lately I figure just a bright neon magenta CD does the job. Open the case and POW–there it is.

dear mr. selzer,
http://www.slapyouinpublic.com/2007/11/jacques_renault_dan_selzer_liv.html
^ do you happen know the name of the very first track? i know this isnt your half of the mix, but since you are a scholar of considerable learning i thought id ask anyway.
― ☪, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)
i listened to this mix after dmr reco'med it. really liked it, dug the halloween stuff even more. afterwards i had to google this jacqu3s renau1t character to figure out who he was, i'm so out of touch with what the young people are into these days.
― sanskrit, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)
sorry I don't know it.
A lot of what Jacques plays are his own edits.
I met him a few years ago, he used to come to Capones on occasion when we were doing Alldisco. He recorded a mix that was really great and pretty up my alley that was supposed to be the first release on Italians Do It Better. I don't know if they pressed a lot but I think Mike was selling them. He does edits and some new productions as Runaway with Marcos Cabral, who used to work at Sonic Groove I think and was a techno dude in the pre-electroclash days. They've got stuff coming out on Wurst Edits and a few other labels and Jacques and Justin Miller who works for the DFA host tuesday nights at 205 Club.

as a web designer, i always think of all the restrictions we have to deal w/and how many more things we have to learn than print designers, but after reading yr answer to sexyD, it really makes me remember how little i know about print.

i have the jacques renault italians mix. it's good!
― haitch, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 11:32 (eighteen years ago)
jaxon- you have no idea! google "trapping". But that fact is, most designers are not concerned with this stuff, they either pay the printer fix it all or have production artists working for them, though that's not much different from designers working in photoshop and handing things off to coders or whatever.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)
maybe google "print trapping" otherwise you get lots of articles about beavers.

recorded a mix that was really great and pretty up my alley that was supposed to be the first release on Italians Do It Better. I don't know if they pressed a lot
not sure if they "pressed" any? I got it as a bonus when I ordered the first three Italians 12"s and it came as a CDR. it's real good tho!
also bonus points for making your DJ name a Twin Peaks ref. (unless that is dude's real name, in which case double bonus points)
― dmr, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)
I said bonus a lot in that post
bonus bonus bonus
― dmr, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)
I always assumed that's his real name.
The reason I wasn't sure about them "pressing" any is because I know Jacques made a bunch of dupes with silkscreened covers that he was giving away, then Mike announced it was going to be the first in a series of mix CDs on Italians, then I remember Jacques being like "when's it coming out". So I don't know if Mike just took the rest of Jacques, or if he pressed another batch or whatever.
― dan selzer, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
right ... sorry, I meant *I* wasn't sure, I've never seen a "real" copy, just a CDR
