there's ample parking at both places

What he means is, it won't be any trouble for you to pay to park at these places.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks for the advice - I think I'm beginning to get the picture about this area.

Across the street is the legendary CLUB BANG, favorite of...CARLOS D INTERPOL HERPES.

well that takes care of the "something to do" part. Maybe I can come home with something to start a blog about.

chëshy (chëshy f cat), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Cheshy, let me get back to you on this... there used to be (10+ years ago) great German food/biergarten not far away from here in NORTH SILVERLAKE which used to be a great "meat"-up spot for "sausages" when Silverlake was more "gay" but now it's probably a bunch of valley/oc club bangers and mush (god i hope not).

if i'm back from japan by then i will be for sure to "meat" up.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i like how that reads like a Zagat review.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

are you coming on to me?

chëshy (chëshy f cat), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Red Lion can be good, if you don't mind waiting or dining with hipsters. Again, most of this advice is dependent on having decent transportation.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

And by that, I mean a motorcycle.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - what's the point of even stepping foot in LA if you don't have decent transportation?!

Tito JaXoN (JasonD), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ONLY A NOBODY WALKS IN LA

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

If you don't have a rad convertible, stay the hell out of LA.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a fun Brazilian restaurant called Bossa Nova that's walking distance from KF (and open til like 4am). Right near Amoeba are a good Thai place (forgot what it's called) and The Cat and Fiddle which is fun for beers and a burger. If you're not driving, you could take a bus on Sunset? or maybe the Metro (which I've never used or even seen!).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

my ride is just a chainsaw away from being a convertible.

cfc (chëshy f cat), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear Gygax!

Why is Jenny Lewis from Rilo Kiley on the new M. Ward album, which I've heard you talk about so much? Do you like Rilo Kiley now? Does M. Ward like Rilo Kiley, and if so, why?

xoxoxo,
JC

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The new M.Ward record is great... but I have no idea who Jenny Lewis or Rilo Kiley are. I can find out...???

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:29 (twenty-one years ago)

think bad indie band with girl child star lead singer that opened up for superchunk on their last big tour.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

ahhh.... nono, superchunk opened for them! now i remember. never seen them or heard them so i can't comment on that...

as for former child stars, one of my favorite LA bands Sukia/DJ Me/DJ You featured Rossie Harris who played the little kid Joey in Airplane! among many other fantastic cinematic moments.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Kyle likes RIlo Kiley.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Captain Oveur: You ever been in a cockpit before?
Joey: No sir, I've never been up in a plane before.
Captain Oveur: You ever seen a grown man naked?

Captain Oveur: Joey, have you ever been to a Turkish prison?

Joey: Wait a minute. I know you. You're Kareem Abdul-Jabar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Roger Murdock: I'm sorry son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I'm the co-pilot.
Joey: You are Kareem. I've seen you play. My dad's got season tickets.
Roger Murdock: I think you should go back to your seat now Joey. Right Clarence?
Captain Oveur: Nahhhhhh, he's not bothering anyone, let him stay here.
Roger Murdock: But just remember, my name is ROGER MURDOCK. I'm an airline pilot.
Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try... except during the playoffs.
Roger Murdock: The hell I don't. LISTEN KID. I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 25 February 2005 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear gygax!,

Surely, you can't be serious?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 25 February 2005 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Spencer, I used to work with a guy who was almost a dead ringer personality-wise as Johnny... He had me in stitches about 3-4 times a day. Our boss would try to take him seriously and he would just completely come in from left field and our boss would just break down. He was MBA-ing at USC, I wonder what happened to him... hmmm.

I'm thinking no... those sound like straight up Strat single coils to my ears. Tell me why you think it's a JM!

I expected as much... Did you ever see the "Ohio River Boat Song" video?

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes! Very distinctive sound. Any guesses on the amp? Sounds too bright to me to be a Fender.

NO! Buggy. Wait until the price drop, at least.

Probably pretty soon. NYC-gal is in SF right now so... ???

DUDEMAN-

WHERE TO STAY FOR LITTLE $$$$ DURING BOREDOMS WEEKEND?~!

-MANDUDE

you make me feel like a tyrannosaurus rex (deangulberry), Sunday, 27 March 2005 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Try the Days Inn on Grove, it's not far from the club and is a pretty good central location (hayes valley, lower haight, civic center, mission, castro, etc.)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.showhotel.com/daysinn/corp/04535/slideshow.gif

Looks brotally SF. I'm also looking at that hotel that Adam linked to that's right inside Chinatown. I guess that's far from the Independent though ... maybe not too far.

Do you know where the Sightings show is going to be that weekend?

BRO DIDDLEY (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I just saw Word Wars, which was good, but needed more Minutemen. How does Scrabylon compare?

BRO DIDDLEY (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the $$$-differential?

I haven't seen Scrabylon but it was recommended to me.

Word Wars was particularly entertaining because it dealt with the four people profiled in Word Freaks by Stephan Fatsis (I think SF actually makes a guest appearance in Word Wars come to think of it).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Days Inn is $106ish for 2 beds where the Chinatown hotel (Grant something?) was $85.

Word Wars was good, but I felt like it was too focused. It seemed like it was meant merely to get a rub from Word Freak. Scrabylon appears to be more thorough (player list here) and probably a better translation of Fatsis' book to the screen. Fatsis was in Word Wars quite a few times, which definitely backs up my earlier statement.

bro dudely (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, look at you!

Haha, the triple word play on the bottom of the board featured halfway down that page (Robert Felt RIP) is FAG.

If you're going for 2 nights the chinatown place might be a better deal. You can take the 38Geary (one of the most frequent buses in SF) out to Divisadero and walk 6 blocks (or transfer to the 24Divisadero) to the Independent (about 15-25 minutes transit time). The commute from the Days Inn would be about half of that (21Hayes).

Either way, I'd love to have you guys over before the show if you're interested.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of... I have something I keep forgetting to post.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Which hotel will lend itself better to stumbling around drunk at night? It seems like the Chinatown one would, right?

Re: hanging out ... BROTALLY

bro dudely (deangulberry), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well that part of Hayes Valley is not the safest (muggings not uncommon after dark) but pretty mellow if you use good judgement...

Union Square/Chinatown is ultra-safe after dark.

There's a place on Divisadero a couple blocks from the Independent called the Metro Hotel (?) but I'm not sure the cost...

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

$66-79 for a double... give them a call.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i stayed at that one best western. parking was a bitch.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought you guys stayed in the Tenderloin (ie, not far from the Great American?)

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

no, we were at that one best western near union square (i think, my sf geography is tres spotty).

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 March 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, this one is closer to the middle of town (where v00redoms are playing).

Gygax,

I have been offered tickets to a Giants game this Sunday, but this would involve sitting with some rather awkward people. Should I go? Or should I go and see the A's instead sometime? Also I was thinking of going to see the SAN JOSE SHARKS or EARTHQUAKES.
