The important thing is, Brooklyn!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)

brooklyn is cool

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)

ah yeah we are only looking in brooklyn. staying for ten days so like a small increase in price per night has an effect - but i see quite good places for about 50-60 a night.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 13:58 (twelve years ago)

That's so cheap! If I had an extra room I would totally do that!

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 14:28 (twelve years ago)

it seems to be a really popular thing to do. as i mentioned upthread, before airbnb mysteriously stopped syncing with my facebook, it was showing me a lot of the prospective places were run by friends of ilxors i am friends with on fb, like yourself.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 14:54 (twelve years ago)

i have a friend who rents her place on canal out but i think its p expensive plus ew canal

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:01 (twelve years ago)

you can stay in my kitchen if you like

caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:03 (twelve years ago)

do you have an air mattress, and are you capable of making coffee without spilling any on the guy on the air mattress?

if airbnb existed when I left ny and I kept my place I would be so rich right now omg regrets

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:07 (twelve years ago)

I have an air mattress. I'll loan it to caek for a cut of the take.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:09 (twelve years ago)

xp Yes and no, you need someone to be here to do the laundry and clean and give the keys to the next ppl tho. Literally I may end up doing this for a friend w a swank apt if she decides to go that route.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

btw the Commonwealth bar in Pk Slope is having their annual lobster boil Sunday, 4:30-8, $20.

We went last year but I will be unable to get there (Film Fest) til 6:30, but I think I can still get a lobster then. If you wanna go, say so here. We can send an email w/ a number (by Sat night) and you can start eating before me.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:13 (twelve years ago)

I think I have to pass this year--I know! Booooo!--but like everything at Commonwealth, this promises to be a good time.

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:22 (twelve years ago)

i was gonna ask as well, and it's way in advance of me getting there in 5/6 weeks, but for finding bars and restaurants, besides asking you all, what website is good or is it just twitter?

i know all the sort of hipstery names that people mention in london (or rip off for london restaurants) eg pok pok, a few of the bbq places, mission, and some other like spotted pig in the slightly higher end. some of these look interesting, others less so.

i know it's a gargantuan world of stuff but pretty interested in going to some new cool places but also more eternal institution places, again some of which i've read about, eg katz's deli. i like the vibe of modern restaurants that have been good for a long time, like st john in london.

i just know in london if you arrived and went off buzz you'd only be at good places about half the time.

i read a few sites like serious eats and stuff anyway but i need a lot of info before i trust a place!

also the same with bars, if there are places that are really brilliant favourites or whatever.

xpost caek if you could write these up and put them in your kitchen for when i arrive that'd be ideal.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:26 (twelve years ago)

Ask the ppl in the Queens thread about fancy restaurants, we mostly drink cheap beer and eat whatever snacks are free at the bar.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:35 (twelve years ago)

all the more reason to get an airbnb going

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:44 (twelve years ago)

for mission, you'll need to book a week in advance if you don't want to wait in line. my firend told me of a special way to do it painlessly but i don't recall off hand

乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:46 (twelve years ago)

btw if anyone knows of a bar right near where admrl is staying, give it, bcz we can't make him do the work.

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:52 (twelve years ago)

Where is he again?

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

i am in all seriousness subletting my 1bed for xmas if anyone knows anyone who would be interested

caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

I dunno! He and I are attending the same film fest and can't make our schedules jibe. xp

eclectic husbandry (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 October 2013 15:53 (twelve years ago)

LG, you can check out nymag's dining section http://nymag.com/restaurants/?f=food for a non-yelp alternative

but yeah there's a ton of stuff and it'll probably just come down to what's good around where you're staying or whatever you're seeing. it also gets expensive p quick if you wanna really sample 'fine dining' or even moderately-priced-but-still-tasty dining. though maybe compared to UK prices you'll feel okay

乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 15:59 (twelve years ago)

michelin just listed their top 100 and something restaurants under $40

http://michelinmedia.com/news/michelin-reveals-york-citys-2014-bib-gourmands/

caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

A lot of good food in London is quite reasonably priced, like mid-price covers a whole range of great stuff before you get to fine dining per se.

I figure that about finding stuff in an area etc, I guess with bars especially.

xpost

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

michelin has really weird taste

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

i'm more like, 1 entree + 1 beer + tip and tax = $25-30 and i'm like fuuuuuuuck

but i have a friend who spent the summer in london and said like, takeout lo mein was like $20

so maybe your metrics will be different

乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:18 (twelve years ago)

if you want a culinary tour guide for flushing and/or mht chinatown, hmu tho

乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

also some of those restaurants no way youre getting out the door for $40

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

the main difference i notice is that take away is cheap here. if you drink alcohol restaurants here seem (very) expensive to me.

caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:19 (twelve years ago)

yeah i read that too lagøn. the UWS/harlem ones are actually that cheap though afaict and now i have a list to try.

caek, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

completely baffling to me how dim sum go go gets a michelin star year after year

乒乓, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

yeah exactly what i mean

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

like they like it cause its got corny modern decor or what

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:23 (twelve years ago)

that's kind of generally discrediting to Michelin IMO

play on, El Chugadero, play on (Jon Lewis), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:25 (twelve years ago)

mission is closed down, possibly for a long time

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:28 (twelve years ago)

michelin is garbage

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

nymag has decent listings but they give weird stuff "critics picks"

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:29 (twelve years ago)

if you want a culinary tour guide for flushing and/or mht chinatown, hmu tho

Yeah this would be awesome, I was reading about some places in Flushing this week.

Yr friend's experience with London is actually correct really, there is cheap takeaway food, but you could pay a lot in some really bad places.

Then there are v cheap spots or high end places that need not be expensive, gastropubs or small plate bars.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:30 (twelve years ago)

eaters "top 38" is a pretty good list... their "heatmap" is an accurate summary of what ppl are talking about on the internet but its not the same as good

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

also, dont bother with katzs, or carnegie

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

great ny noodletown or shanghai 456 are better "institutions" both in terms of quality and price, i think

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

or russ and daughters if you want good ny jewish food

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:31 (twelve years ago)

There are so many dumb reasons why lots of great places can't win Michelin as to discredit it really.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

Thanks for these Max, really helpful.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:32 (twelve years ago)

mission chinese closing btw http://eater.com/archives/2013/10/03/doh-shutters-mission-chinese-food-in-nyc.php

max, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:33 (twelve years ago)

katz pastrami is pretty great if kinda wildly expensive imho, like i wouldnt make a destination out of it but if you happen to be drunk and nearby and ready to house a big pile of meat then by all means

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:34 (twelve years ago)

ippudo is like a million times better than momofuku in like every way imho if you want ramen, and really you shd

lag∞n, Friday, 4 October 2013 16:36 (twelve years ago)

With craft beer and stuff I'm guessing that it's just kind of omnipresent like London? Here there's no real need to go to a bar specifically for whatever beer as many have local good stuff or big tap selections anyhow.

I was in NY before but it was about 06, literally my only interest at this time was techno.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Friday, 4 October 2013 16:39 (twelve years ago)

when i have ppl in town i usually take them to like great ny noodletown and either otto or co., all of which are terrific, not too expensive restaurants that you can usually get a table at pretty quickly and are also like, "new york food" i.e. chinese/pizza
