Hi I'm in your Fort Greene. I like this Fort - I recognized the block from Dave Chapelle's Block Party and that was exciting. I walked around a bit and it was not at all as douchey as I expected. What's good to see in the neighborhood?

well the BAM opera house dates from the 19th century, but you can't go in yet.

yeah the whole greater downtown brooklyn area aka brownstone brooklyn is quite pleasant and nice to look at

I was being a little facetious with the douchey comment, everything I know about Brookyln comes from ILX and the NYT Style section. This neighborhood reminds me a little of my old hood in LA, maybe max knows what I mean? Although when I left, that place was way more annoying than it used to be. People here seem pretty relaxed, everyone seems pretty young though. I guess just a few months in Western Mass has turned me into kind of a bumpkin after spending my whole life in cities!

i feel pretty relaxed about safety etc but my friend is a mildly concerned. if i do get killed i'd like it to be an authentic experience.

Uhhh I think it's completely fine, although possibly a little noisy on the street? I'm not familiar w that immediate block but surrounding area is fine.

It's not really the nicest place, though. Dingy, cheap stores and fried food joints iirc. And Woodhull hospital, just in case.

For the tourist experience of Brooklyn, you probably don't want to be staying directly across from a project, really. Couldn't you find something in Fort Greene?

yeah that place would be fine safety-wise but it's ugly and unpleasant. if you're really talking right where varet street meets bushwick.

It seems quite near to stuff I guess. I'm kinda okay with spending a bit more but my friend is a bit less so, Airbnb in NYC is quite expensive, obviously. That one is quite cheap and the place looks decent for the price.

yeah it's just bushwick ave itself that's kind of a dump really. the other end of varet street, at bogart, is kind of a main corridor for hipster bushwick stuff.

ah yeah we are only looking in brooklyn. staying for ten days so like a small increase in price per night has an effect - but i see quite good places for about 50-60 a night.

it seems to be a really popular thing to do. as i mentioned upthread, before airbnb mysteriously stopped syncing with my facebook, it was showing me a lot of the prospective places were run by friends of ilxors i am friends with on fb, like yourself.

i have a friend who rents her place on canal out but i think its p expensive plus ew canal

xp Yes and no, you need someone to be here to do the laundry and clean and give the keys to the next ppl tho. Literally I may end up doing this for a friend w a swank apt if she decides to go that route.

btw the Commonwealth bar in Pk Slope is having their annual lobster boil Sunday, 4:30-8, $20.

We went last year but I will be unable to get there (Film Fest) til 6:30, but I think I can still get a lobster then. If you wanna go, say so here. We can send an email w/ a number (by Sat night) and you can start eating before me.
