three weeks pass...

Hi, I was responsible for much of that Morrissey coverage in the Guardian. Yes, much of it is a search for clicks - but that's because people want to read it. And while it's easy to say we shouldn't hunt clicks, the fact is it's really hard to make money in newspapers and every click brings in a little bit of ad revenue. And the more ad revenue we can get from doing Morrissey stories, the more money we can invest in serious reporting: that's the absolutely crucial point (also, as I say, a lot of people did want to read the stories; no one's forcing those who don't). The overnight news stories, well … you're not going to get Martha Gellhorn when someone who's done a full day goes home for three hours, then goes back into the office to work through the night reading and filleting the book.

The unfunny preview blog was mine, too. Not my finest hour. Alone on the music desk this week, having to do a shedload of stuff, and some suffered. More pleased with Savage's piece on what Morrissey represented in 1983, which I commissioned.

i do think there's a huge swath of people who think of lou reed as some guy who had one memorable ditty (walk on the wild side) once upon a time, like he was david essex or something.

This is me, pretty much. I've never cared for classic rock or punk rock, so I couldn't really name any other song by the dude than "Walk on the Wild Side" (which I prefer as the Finnish-language cover version done by the great jazz/pop singer Lasse Mårtenson) and "Perfect Day" (which I wouldn't know if it wasn't for Trainspotting). I'm not trying to be willfully ignorant, and I recognize that a lot of people were influenced by Reed, but IMO in the year 2013 his legacy is so far in the past, and/or heard in such marginal genres, that even someone quite knowledgable in pop music might not know him for anything else than those two hits, unless he was specifically into the specific subgenres of rock where he might still be valued highly.

That said, I've nothing against the dude, just wanted to point out that people who know him for only one or two tunes aren't necessarily ignorant. RIP.

Friendships are a bitch.

I want to end this 'friendship' with this girl because, basically, well, not to sound all superficial and like an insensitive gross jerk, but I just wanted to get in her panties.

I realised one outing too late she only likes me as a 'friend'. That's cool.

So, I start flaking out on her and I'm super brief and vague and tell her stuff like 'sure just give me a call whenever'. I come back from a trip and she hadn't contacted me all week and I thought, 'Yes...finally, get out of my life'. Then last night she says "Happy Halloween! How have you been? :)'.

ARGHHHHHH. Go away. I was playing along because I have already invested enough time and have performed some of my magic on her to just let her go so easily, just in case.

Ya, I'm stringing her along until she gets tired of trying, because I view this relationship as disposable.

I feel it's important for me to clarify that if I consider you my friend, or best friend, I will do just about anything for you. But if I don't, I am a totally different person.

Plus, I sense she is using me for my knowledge of the English language, because she has asked me to help her with her homework.

(And she just sent me a text...)

the ability to make up a bunch of bullshit opinions about whatever topic people happen to be talking about has its advantages and its drawbacks. you can easily lose track of what you actually know and what you've made up and say a bunch of half-baked bullshit that irritates people who actually know/care about the topic at hand. it seems like a talent of the bloviated spielers more so than the quickwitted, who are often pretty judicious about what things they actually talk about.
