you may want to try Century 21 in lower manhattan, good place for discounted luxury stuff. some of it is STILL expensive but you can get, like, $200 shirts for $75. I usually only come out of there with one or two things and you need to leave yourself a lotta time to browse but the stuff I get there I'd never be able to afford if I just went to that brand's store in soho or whatever.

I've gotten some pretty sick ties at Century 21 (Brioni and the like) for good prices -- you have to dig a bit for the ones that aren't ugly or weird colors, but you can find steals.

it's usually a fuckin mess in there but I went last week and they've changed around the men's floor a lot and dialed back the chaos

maybe in general ... my wife hates the place though ... never finds anything, won't really go there anymore.

I mean I haven't been in a while, but there's a lot of weird sort of eurofashion-looking stuff there that might technically be a good deal but is just way outside my style.

it was somewhere on ilx that someone described it as the place where you go, get into some good deals, and then discover you just walked out with a bunch of shiny shirts.

I bought my most colorful sweater ever there, and some otherwise awesome-fitting jeans that had what I could only describe as a silvery Hugo Boss "plaque" on the belt line on the back, but as long as you didn't tuck a shirt in you couldn't see it

oh there are def a lot of things there where I'm like hey that shirt's kinda nice and then it turns out there's a giant tiger stitched on the back. pro tip, don't buy those shirts

Yes, it is. And yes, I know him, he is a really nice guy. I met him at NYU when I was a grad student and he was a postdoc. Haven't seen him too much recently, he is pretty busy these days though, has three small kids.

ha I literally just saw him on college walk I think.

Think the last time I saw him was a few years ago when his first kid was a few months old and I went with Chris and ilxor tipsy mothra to see the similarly-named fellow Columbia professor and fellow trombonist Chris Washburne play his old Sunday night gig at Smoke.
