lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)

you could ask your shared friend if the airbnb person is a douchebag

beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 12 September 2013 13:57 (twelve years ago)

i feel like asking would be almost embarrassing. i guess the truth is most people are probably fine to stay with, and this is prob just a way for people who doubt that to convince themselves.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 September 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)

How is getting from Clinton Hill to Manhattan? I am guessing I will be at Lincoln Center most of my stay, but airbnbs in Manhattan are too pricey, plus my wife needs somewhere to work during the day so we're looking for something bigger than a studio. Also, again, street parking would be great. Maybe I look in Queens too...?

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)

Also - I need to do some shopping, clothes mostly. What are your favorite new york places in which to make this kind of acquisition?

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

prob take you like an hour c train to columbus circle then walk a few blocks

lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)

in Queens LIC or Astoria would put you close, otherwise it might be a trek, plus the wildcard of track work rerouting...

Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)

if you stayed somewhere closer to the atlantic ave stop you could get there a lil faster

lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)

yeah that's what I thought. As I said, I haven't been to the city since 2000, and I've never been to Brooklyn + have people to visit there, but I also pretty much intend on rinsing my access to the festival so won't have much time to walk around and look at stuff. I hope to back soon though. All the people I know seem to live in Fort Greene, I don't know, these places are pretty much abstract to me. But it might be nice to be in a good neighborhood for morning walk around and look at stuff.

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:10 (twelve years ago)

What kind of clothes shopping do you want to do? All the brand name and luxury stuff you could want is in midtown (5th, madison, lex, etc.). Soho, the LES, Williamsburg and Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill all have a lot of hipper, boutiquey stuff (still largely expensive). BTW if you're looking to buy shoes, Soula is amazing imo (one I think in Park Slope and one in Carroll Gardens). Century 21 downtown is pretty interesting for an outlet shop and a big tourist destination, although it seems like women have better luck there than men. There are still lots of good thrift and vintage shops dotted around Brooklyn. I don't really buy clothes anymore except an occasional new work shirt in a BR or BB sale, so I'm probably not the best guide.

I would really recommend staying in Fort Greene, it's great, and I think the slightly longer ride to Lincoln Center would be worth it. Staying in a nice neighborhood makes a travel experience like 10x better imo.

I assume Fort Greene has clothing boutiques too, I just don't know them as well.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:12 (twelve years ago)

not really. has like 2

max, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:14 (twelve years ago)

Thanks! I probably can't afford "luxury" but you know, I need to dress like an adult a little more than I used to and probably have to spend a little more accordingly. Shoes are particularly important so I'll look at those places.

And yes, I might just deal with the longer ride and look in Fort Greene. I'm actually okay with long transit rides now that I live in a small town - they're exotic! And temporary

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

just go to soho they got all the stores there

lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:16 (twelve years ago)

OK!

I'm excited to go to new york

Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:17 (twelve years ago)

yeah Soho also has all the chains (Uniqlo, Gap, BR, J Crew, American Apparel, Levis Store etc.)

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:22 (twelve years ago)

you may want to try Century 21 in lower manhattan, good place for discounted luxury stuff. some of it is STILL expensive but you can get, like, $200 shirts for $75. I usually only come out of there with one or two things and you need to leave yourself a lotta time to browse but the stuff I get there I'd never be able to afford if I just went to that brand's store in soho or whatever.

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:04 (twelve years ago)

I've gotten some pretty sick ties at Century 21 (Brioni and the like) for good prices -- you have to dig a bit for the ones that aren't ugly or weird colors, but you can find steals.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:06 (twelve years ago)

feel like i havent found something i liked at century 21 in so long

lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:07 (twelve years ago)

it's usually a fuckin mess in there but I went last week and they've changed around the men's floor a lot and dialed back the chaos

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:11 (twelve years ago)

yeah i was gonna rep for century 21. their shoe store is good too

"Dave Barlow" is the name Lou uses on sabermetrics baseball sites (s.clover), Friday, 13 September 2013 17:23 (twelve years ago)

oh didn't see that Hurting already mentioned C21

although it seems like women have better luck there than men

maybe in general ... my wife hates the place though ... never finds anything, won't really go there anymore.

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 17:41 (twelve years ago)

I mean I haven't been in a while, but there's a lot of weird sort of eurofashion-looking stuff there that might technically be a good deal but is just way outside my style.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:27 (twelve years ago)

it was somewhere on ilx that someone described it as the place where you go, get into some good deals, and then discover you just walked out with a bunch of shiny shirts.

but it's not bad for some stuff, true

chinavision!, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:33 (twelve years ago)

lol otm

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:35 (twelve years ago)

I bought my most colorful sweater ever there, and some otherwise awesome-fitting jeans that had what I could only describe as a silvery Hugo Boss "plaque" on the belt line on the back, but as long as you didn't tuck a shirt in you couldn't see it

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:37 (twelve years ago)

oh there are def a lot of things there where I'm like hey that shirt's kinda nice and then it turns out there's a giant tiger stitched on the back. pro tip, don't buy those shirts

dmr, Friday, 13 September 2013 18:40 (twelve years ago)

I know! But I'm not very good at shopping, and after three or four stitched tiger reveals I just fall to my knees and throw up my hands in despair.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Friday, 13 September 2013 18:43 (twelve years ago)
