what i can't fathom is since l***** is sweet as pie (as always), shouldn't she be caek?and shouldn't the astronomer be in orbit?
We should switch log-ins and see who notices first.

as a recent tourist, if east village places are affordable then i would go there. i airbnbed in clinton hill last year and it was great, and i would love to live there, but i'd been to new york several times and had a hunch i would be moving here soon, so i wasn't necessarily looking for The City. if you wantnew york 101 and you like food, bars, etc. then the e village is a good bet.
xp ha!
― caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)
ya if you want to be in the shit prob stay in the e village if you want to be some place nicer but more peripheral but not that peripheral + w access to all the trains stay in ft greene
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)
I suggest either Yonkers, Scarsdale or connecticutt
― 乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)
e village and w'burg also among the best people-watching in the city, which is all i ever really want to do anyway
― max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)
mill basin
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)
yeah east village seems to have a lot more airbnb options. bout 120 a night which between two isn't bad.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)
college point -- it's an awesome area where all the college students hang out that's why it's called that
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)
thanks for this advice btw.
mill basin looks ideal.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)
there are actually loads of places in wburg if i/we share with people - and they're cheaper. kinda tempted to roll the dice on this and ruin my holiday see what happens.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)
it might be kinda fun to try and figure out which of the shared places like to party
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)
meet some people you know see what happens
stay in a loft w 8 residents or w/e
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)
williamsburg is a pretty good option -- I'd actually stay there over the east village personally, not a big fan of the east village. OTOH back when I lived there there were often weekend L train problems, which kind of strands you in Brooklyn. Don't know if that has died down.
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)
it will never die because the L train has no express track
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)
If you get stranded just go north and enjoy pierogis and borscht it's nbd
― 乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)
yeah there are a lot of big loft places like that i think. i'm sure the chances are it would be fun. esp if i have a friend's place to crash in as a backup, just in case.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)
if you stay in the East Village you will probably get a tiny shoebox bedroom. All of the apartments in the East Village are like that. All of them.
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)
hilarious the amount of wburg places on airbnb that say "a retreat for artists" etc - like europeans booking their holiday dreaming they're going to finally make that sculpture they've been seeing every day through the holes in the excel spreadsheet.
xpost that's how the east village pics appear, living room/kitchen with a bed in it.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)
yeah that is for sure true
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)
If you stay in wburg you will probably stay in a sick modern condo build in 2010
― 乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)
and end up in a sex dungeon
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)
Yeah it seemed like every time I ate at a friend's place in the EV you'd have to get up from the table so the person next you could get over to the bathroom. If they were gutsy enough to use a bathroom that was three feet from the kitchen table everyone was sitting at.
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)
this would be fine except if it's also the kitchen.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)
its also the kitchen
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:33 (twelve years ago)
I'm going to open a loft hostel in East New York and market the area as "The East Berlin of New York"
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:34 (twelve years ago)
its hard to have a bad time in ny if you just want to go out to bars and shop for shit and people watch
― max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:35 (twelve years ago)
Garda, if you're here for one of our elections you might get paid to vote

some stores in soho will let you spend euros but prob not pounds sorry
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:37 (twelve years ago)
pounds? you can't even buy kilograms.
― caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)
dunno if all europeans get this but last time i was there i was completely blown away, like there's a buzz you get on the street that is kind of a culture shock, i guess it's the same in other major world cities. perhaps london is too close to dublin and too culturally similar to have had that effect on me.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:40 (twelve years ago)
i used to get that going from brooklyn to manhattan no joke
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:42 (twelve years ago)
i worked at home tho
Otm to the extent that spending time here over the last few years has definitely opened my eyes to the appeal of London more
― caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)
Some parts are like that other parts are just like philadelphia
― 乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:43 (twelve years ago)
I've been taking my 18-month-old daughter into Manhattan twice a week from Queens and she kind of bursts into excited yells when we get out of the subway elevator on Lexington. There's definitely an energy to the place, even in Midtown.
― #fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)
ha awesome
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:45 (twelve years ago)
for sleepiness, come to my nabe and watch old Ukrainian men play dominoes outdoors.

werid, like is that even useful
― lag∞n, Thursday, 12 September 2013 13:53 (twelve years ago)
you could ask your shared friend if the airbnb person is a douchebag
― beautifully, unapologetically plastic (mh), Thursday, 12 September 2013 13:57 (twelve years ago)
i feel like asking would be almost embarrassing. i guess the truth is most people are probably fine to stay with, and this is prob just a way for people who doubt that to convince themselves.
― Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Thursday, 12 September 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)
How is getting from Clinton Hill to Manhattan? I am guessing I will be at Lincoln Center most of my stay, but airbnbs in Manhattan are too pricey, plus my wife needs somewhere to work during the day so we're looking for something bigger than a studio. Also, again, street parking would be great. Maybe I look in Queens too...?
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:01 (twelve years ago)
Also - I need to do some shopping, clothes mostly. What are your favorite new york places in which to make this kind of acquisition?
― Chantal Anchorman (admrl), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)
prob take you like an hour c train to columbus circle then walk a few blocks
― lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
in Queens LIC or Astoria would put you close, otherwise it might be a trek, plus the wildcard of track work rerouting...
― Miss Arlington twirls for the Coal Heavers (Dr Morbius), Friday, 13 September 2013 16:05 (twelve years ago)
if you stayed somewhere closer to the atlantic ave stop you could get there a lil faster
― lag∞n, Friday, 13 September 2013 16:08 (twelve years ago)
yeah that's what I thought. As I said, I haven't been to the city since 2000, and I've never been to Brooklyn + have people to visit there, but I also pretty much intend on rinsing my access to the festival so won't have much time to walk around and look at stuff. I hope to back soon though. All the people I know seem to live in Fort Greene, I don't know, these places are pretty much abstract to me. But it might be nice to be in a good neighborhood for morning walk around and look at stuff.

What kind of clothes shopping do you want to do? All the brand name and luxury stuff you could want is in midtown (5th, madison, lex, etc.). Soho, the LES, Williamsburg and Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill all have a lot of hipper, boutiquey stuff (still largely expensive). BTW if you're looking to buy shoes, Soula is amazing imo (one I think in Park Slope and one in Carroll Gardens). Century 21 downtown is pretty interesting for an outlet shop and a big tourist destination, although it seems like women have better luck there than men. There are still lots of good thrift and vintage shops dotted around Brooklyn. I don't really buy clothes anymore except an occasional new work shirt in a BR or BB sale, so I'm probably not the best guide.
I would really recommend staying in Fort Greene, it's great, and I think the slightly longer ride to Lincoln Center would be worth it. Staying in a nice neighborhood makes a travel experience like 10x better imo.
