lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 14:40 (twelve years ago)

i did it for a week. was not bad, i kind of meant to sign up for the full year but ive been lazy and out of town

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:20 (twelve years ago)

seems like itd be cool for one way trips and not having to worry abt where to put a bike

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:29 (twelve years ago)

what happens when you pull up to a station but all the spots are full

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)

does it tell u where the closest other citiracks are

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:40 (twelve years ago)

yeah, theres a map on all of them, theyre mostly just like 2 blocks away, plus if you have the app you can look ahead of time

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:42 (twelve years ago)

it was really useful basically to take from a block away from my apt to a better train. could see it being good for tooling around brooklyn too tho there arent any stations south of atlantic yet

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

but i was thinking it would be really perfect for going from my apt to like williamsburg eg

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:43 (twelve years ago)

its also a heavy bike. i rode it from my office in soho all the way back to ft greene one day, the bridge wasnt too bad but ft greene is on a dang hill and the last few blocks were too much

a return to the old gritty new york

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 15:48 (twelve years ago)

caek i can't vouch for the quality of their refurbs but Bike Store - 437 E 6th St, New York, NY 10009

you could make an afternoon of bike shopping, record shopping at A1, and banh mi in one go

sold. thanks for the tips sanskrit and in orbit.

i don't mind if it's actually stolen, as long as i don't know it's stolen.

no citibike north of 59th st :-(

what do you all think about where to stay for a 10-day holiday? i'm thinking like brooklyn or whatever and will prob stay with a friend there for some days and then airbnb it, so i could see some diff parts of the city. i don't want to just go to hipsterville for the sake of it but i suppose i'm likely to want to spend time in that sort of place, for good beer/restaurants/clubs/record stores, so maybe brooklyn is best.

beyond those limited interests i am sure there is tons of shit i want to see but don't really know where to start, last time i came was 2006 and i didn't really have a sense of my interests besides techno...

part of me just tends to consider seeing a city as going out a lot v late.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

really conscious of me not having a clue about size/centres etc in my above post.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:32 (twelve years ago)

i mean i kinda hate to say it but for all those things + easy access to more of those things, williamsburg probably is your best bet? no clue what an airbnb room will run you

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:45 (twelve years ago)

u shd stay in manhattan tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:46 (twelve years ago)

For pleasanter street experiences tbh I wld say try to stay in Fort Greene, you can cab it to Wburg from there easily/cheaply and it's nicer walking around, but ymmv.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:47 (twelve years ago)

ft greene is the most beautiful and mellow, e village approximates some sort of lost ny gritty artiness, w village is realistically representative of new yorks current gilded age, williamsburg is a disgusting avatar for global youth culture: these are my recomendations

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

walking around in ft greene (my hood!) or c hill is great but the restaurants/bars aren't as good tho maybe cheaper

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:51 (twelve years ago)

or you could just drape a tarp over two citibikes

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

not just great, probably the best two hoods to walk around in the city

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:52 (twelve years ago)

i had a look at airbnb, there were some entire places for about £100 a night, i think, and a friend is coming with me. we just don't want to crash with my friend who lives there for the entire ten days, bit much.

there are loads of places in the east village, which seems like it'd be a decent base. bit more expensive but not massively so. there aren't loads of airbnb options in williamsburg from what i could see.

xpost there are more places peripheral to wburg alright, quite a few.

xxposts i live pretty near london's disgusting avatar for global youth culture, this is what attracts/repels me from wburg.

it's pricey for airbnb but i'm guessing still way cheaper than any other option.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:54 (twelve years ago)

what i can't fathom is since l***** is sweet as pie (as always), shouldn't she be caek?
and shouldn't the astronomer be in orbit?

We should switch log-ins and see who notices first.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:55 (twelve years ago)

as a recent tourist, if east village places are affordable then i would go there. i airbnbed in clinton hill last year and it was great, and i would love to live there, but i'd been to new york several times and had a hunch i would be moving here soon, so i wasn't necessarily looking for The City. if you wantnew york 101 and you like food, bars, etc. then the e village is a good bet.

xp ha!

caek, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:58 (twelve years ago)

ya if you want to be in the shit prob stay in the e village if you want to be some place nicer but more peripheral but not that peripheral + w access to all the trains stay in ft greene

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:59 (twelve years ago)

I suggest either Yonkers, Scarsdale or connecticutt

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:01 (twelve years ago)

e village and w'burg also among the best people-watching in the city, which is all i ever really want to do anyway

max, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

mill basin

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:02 (twelve years ago)

yeah east village seems to have a lot more airbnb options. bout 120 a night which between two isn't bad.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:05 (twelve years ago)

college point -- it's an awesome area where all the college students hang out that's why it's called that

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

thanks for this advice btw.

mill basin looks ideal.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:06 (twelve years ago)

there are actually loads of places in wburg if i/we share with people - and they're cheaper. kinda tempted to roll the dice on this and ruin my holiday see what happens.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:11 (twelve years ago)

it might be kinda fun to try and figure out which of the shared places like to party

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

meet some people you know see what happens

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:13 (twelve years ago)

stay in a loft w 8 residents or w/e

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:14 (twelve years ago)

williamsburg is a pretty good option -- I'd actually stay there over the east village personally, not a big fan of the east village. OTOH back when I lived there there were often weekend L train problems, which kind of strands you in Brooklyn. Don't know if that has died down.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:15 (twelve years ago)

it will never die because the L train has no express track

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

If you get stranded just go north and enjoy pierogis and borscht it's nbd

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:16 (twelve years ago)

yeah there are a lot of big loft places like that i think. i'm sure the chances are it would be fun. esp if i have a friend's place to crash in as a backup, just in case.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:17 (twelve years ago)

if you stay in the East Village you will probably get a tiny shoebox bedroom. All of the apartments in the East Village are like that. All of them.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

hilarious the amount of wburg places on airbnb that say "a retreat for artists" etc - like europeans booking their holiday dreaming they're going to finally make that sculpture they've been seeing every day through the holes in the excel spreadsheet.

xpost that's how the east village pics appear, living room/kitchen with a bed in it.

Evil Juice Box Man (LocalGarda), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:19 (twelve years ago)

yeah that is for sure true

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:20 (twelve years ago)

If you stay in wburg you will probably stay in a sick modern condo build in 2010

乒乓, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:23 (twelve years ago)

and end up in a sex dungeon

lag∞n, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

Yeah it seemed like every time I ate at a friend's place in the EV you'd have to get up from the table so the person next you could get over to the bathroom. If they were gutsy enough to use a bathroom that was three feet from the kitchen table everyone was sitting at.

#fomo that's the motto (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:25 (twelve years ago)

and end up in a sex dungeon

this would be fine except if it's also the kitchen.
