"you gonna drink that?"

*grabs beer, sits down*

dmr, Wednesday, 31 July 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

this discussion reminds me of calvino's "The adventure of a traveler" which you can read in some crummy web version buried on this page: http://web.mit.edu/jot/Public/Calvino,%20Italo/Difficult%20Loves/DifficultLoves.htm

Federico V. chose an empty compartment, not over the wheels but not too far into the coach, either, because he knew that as a rule people who board a train in haste tend to reject the first few compartments. The defense of the space necessary to stretch out and travel lying down is made up of tiny psychological devices; Federico knew them and employed them all. For example, he drew the curtains over the door, an act that, performed at this point, might even seem excessive; but it aimed, in fact, at a psychological effect. Seeing those drawn curtains, the traveler who arrives later is almost always overcome by an instinctive scruple and prefers, if he can find it, a compartment with perhaps two or three people in it already but with the curtains open. Federico strewed his bag, overcoat, newspapers on the seats opposite and beside him. Another elementary move, abused and apparently futile but actually of use. Not that he wanted to make people believe those places were occupied: such a subterfuge would have been contrary to his civic conscience and to his sincere nature. He wanted only to create a rapid impression of a cluttered, not very inviting compartment, a simple, rapid impression.

He sat down and heaved a sigh of relief. He had learned that being in a setting where everything can only be in its place, the same as always, anonymous, without possible surprises, filled him with calm, with self-awareness, freedom of thought. His whole life rushed along in disorder, but now he found the perfect balance between interior stimulus and the impassive neutrality of material things.

3. i like to sit in the front of the bus cuz then it's faster getting off, and if the bus isn't totally full it's less likely you'll have to sit next to someone. it seems that people keep walking back in pursuit of a vacant pair, even as the bus fills up.

another key point: the front of the bus best distances you from wafting vapors from the bathroom at the back of the bus. this is very u+k

worst part about taking the bus to nyc for me is there's always a transfer in albany & you have to wait like an hour minimum

ha, i read this as "i read an article abt a kid whos making beer in his barn and think hes god or something". sounds like a justified episode.

four weeks pass...

you can just turn up to the megabus with a confirmation email on your phone, right? or do you need a printout?

caek, Friday, 30 August 2013 22:40 (twelve years ago)

I don't know, I haven't taken it since smartphones? Sorry.

Treeship, Friday, 30 August 2013 22:53 (twelve years ago)

HUNNERD TEN PERCENT GUARANTEE

my little trick is to open up the email beforehand (make sure the number they need is on the screen) and take a screengrab so that in case I'm having network issues I can still access the confirmation number

bolt > greyhound express > mega imo

mileena cyrax (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 03:24 (twelve years ago)

but i mean tbh they are all more or less interchangeable (though bolt has rewards program!)

mileena cyrax (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 03:25 (twelve years ago)

The Greyhound Express is good?? I thought all Greyhounds were equally crap. This is good to know.

DC2NY also good if DC is where you're headed.

ljubljana, Tuesday, 3 September 2013 03:28 (twelve years ago)

Greyhound Express is their Bolt/Mega competitor which means cheaper + outlets + wifi + nicer seats w/ more legroom!!

mileena cyrax (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 3 September 2013 03:29 (twelve years ago)

never again
