working on Marfa blog post. A more epic undertaking than originally planned. Using it as an excuse to also set up wedding site. Hopefully in the next few days.
In the meantime, I'll be playing music on WNYU tonight at 9pm. It's a "psychedelic" show and I'll be stretching that. May play some 60s stuff but thought it might be more fun to play 60s-esque post-punk.

had lunch with a friend who also visited marfa/alpine just a few weeks ago and we picked his brain about it. we're excited. with all the good advice coming to us, we'll really enjoy it i'm sure.

awesome set dude
dan can u tell me about the 70's disco label emergency records? i've been slowly accumulating their catalog on soulseek but a lot of it isn't turning up, do they get a lot of props? is vinyl sought-after or rare/$$$? what's your favourite single? most stuff i've heard so far is pretty fantastic and i've always found italo to be super hit or miss idk
― flopson, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:10 (twelve years ago)
More of an 80s label. I think they were one of the New York labels that specialized in licensing/importing euro stuff. There's a whole narrative there about the american gatekeepers like Emergency and Importe/12 that defined "euro-disco" for americans (and later I'd say the same about the chicago Hot Mix DJs).
Kano's I'm Ready/Holly Dolly, Electra's Feels Good were big and influential on house and techno bigtime. (Sharivari = Holly Dolly).
American club stuff like MIchelle Wallace or Chemise She Can't Love You are classic, the latter a floor-filler I used to always hear Danny Wang play when I started DJing.
Most of the records aren't worth much because they're pretty common, certainly in NY at least.
But Emergency switched focus to freestyle, which they helped pioneer with Shannon's Let the Music Play, C.O.D. In the Bottle etc.
I didn't realize they put out a pressing of IMS's Dancing Therapy. That's not so easy to find, at least I still don't have a copy!
Electric Mind's Pick Me Up(Can We Go)/Zwei is a classic, I play that a lot. Early evening warm-up track.
I used to love playing Bo Boss's Tequila, but it's a bit silly. Actually listening again now...it's pretty damn hot.
I see they kept with the euro stuff later on. I'm a big big fan of Taffy's Midnight Radio, which, chronologically, is about as late as I'd dare get with italo. It has that later mid 80s italo sound, more digital, not as lo-fi or spacey, but is super catchy.

Then there's electro/freestyle stuff like Nolan Thomas, which I've never particularly dug...you can't walk down a street in NYC with tripping over a dozen copies of Yo Little Brother.
― dan selzer, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:33 (twelve years ago)
but because I was an electro-funk fan before I discovered italo-disco, this is always the first record that comes to mind when I think of Emergency...

Just noticed Emergency released Capricorn and Easy Going, both Claudio Simonetti related (Goblin) and was looking for Easy Going's Fear and realized that came out on Importe/12. Interestingly Importe/12 also released most of the Man Parrish stuff, though he was involved in COD. Looking at Importe/12's catalog it's like a little version of Emergency. A bunch of Man Parrish electro/hi-nrg stuff amidst euro licenses like Tantra, Rama, Easy Going. And Elton Motello? There's a ubiquitous compilation Called Prime Cuts 1 The Double Dance Album which is everywhere and features Sunbelt's "Spin It" and one of my all time faves, Show Me Yours by Corruption. One of those weird songs that i don't think was ever released outside of that compilation and a disconet compilation. And NOBODY ever plays it but it's totally killer. Really raw and analog, with awesome female vox.

(Sharivari = Holly Dolly)
ha I never thought of it that way. I need a better copy of that 12", mine is beat up, more so on the Holly Dolly side so I don't listen to that track much. I'm Ready is awesome.
― dmr, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 16:04 (twelve years ago)
word is that the detroit club kids would double up the break of Holly Dolly, which is pretty long. I don't love that song though. I'm Ready however is all-time.

I have mixed feelings about Tom's using Stand On the Word, was kind of funny but also kind of made me think he wished he wasn't there!

The Joubert Singers were performing the song live at the Good Room party with No Ordinary Monkey and Peaking Lights. I might've chosen to celebrate New Years somehow differently! It sounded great and was a great choice obviously, but being bitter that I couldn't be two places at once, I might not wanted the reminder!

There were a few stores. There was Crazy Rhythms and then there was Cafe Soundz (an Industrial Café!) and TwinTone(TwoTone?) which was next door and they merged. There was also a more indie-rock store who's name I can't remember which was someone from Venus records, and later on long after I'd left NJ another vintage store w/ record section.
