Robert Ashley - Lesson One and Lesson Four

from Music Word Fire (The Lessons), 1981

disco

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 21:46 (twenty years ago)

jesus milton, these are incredible! 1981?! any chance you could post the others? i'll be eternally grateful to you. do you have a link with more ino on these?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Huh. I'm an Ashley fan but I'd never heard of these. They're adaptations of bits from Perfect Lives, right? Are they from this LP? I was confused by 'The Bar' appearing in the MP3 tags, as I can't find a split Bar/Music Word split LP.

Brakhage (brakhage), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

that's the link. he put out two ep's with studio versions of things from Perfect Lives that have never come out again on disc, so I threw them onto one CD. I can't believe Lovely hasn't done the same. (the rerecordings for the 3 CD version of Perfect Lives = good but not as good)

Lesson 2, Lesson 3

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

milton's tracks remind me of a band called Video Aventures. this one was recorded 1979, but not released until 1981, and features members of Etron Fou Leloublan and Lard Free:

Video Aventures - Tina

Dominique (dleone), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

thanks for those milton. thanks Dominique too - great track.

Two by Glenn Gould:

Laurie Spiegel - Sound Zones from Unseen Worlds, 1994

live improvisations with her own Music Mouse software

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

& one more pussy classical shit track for stence

Paul Dolden - Intoxication by Speed

that Sensational track is great, MindinRewind, is the rest of the album that good?

& "knife track" is really good to hear

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

don't get me wrong, i love pussy classical shit, but i hope that ain't all you guys listen to.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

you've got to be kidding

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

it's really hard to tell sometimes! i mean, if you're gonna think that i'm talking about you specifically, or something. anyway, this thread does need more rarities from other genres, i don't see how that could be denied.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 September 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah I know, where are they! I'd love to hear more straight out rock. I liked ddb's comp tracks. Things don't have to be rarities, chances are half of us haven't heard something

btw I checked out 'Day of Niagra' for the first time in a few years the other day... got to play it as loud as it deserves... I've totally come around on that record, I loved it.

so I was wrong to say 'subpar', it's actually great to have an Eternal Music record that has Conrad & Cale three times louder than anyone else, sounds more like Four Violins than Map of 49's Dream. but it still seems like a real provocation putting out that particular recording, because it sounds completely unlike all the other Eternal Music tapes that have leaked. They couldn't have found one that minimizes Young & Zazeela's contribution more... which is actually kind of cool.

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

just to put the term "pussy" into perspective ;) ;)

one eye white, one eye black (FE7), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

the ultimate version of ministrys "stigmata" (live, from this comp)

one eye white, one eye black (FE7), Friday, 30 September 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

richard barrett's new work for ensemble. this was prob bootlegged off the premiere. 'NO' came w/notes condemming the govt's actions in iraq (i suspect its a 'NO' to a lot else) but the music doesn't match the aggression that you might expect. as i recall.

anyway...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 30 September 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

You want rock? You get rock!

Robert Fripp brings the rock

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 30 September 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Fripp's finishing a remix/remaster of Exposure with a 2nd disc of archival extras.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

I will buy that album again (hope he uses the original longer vinyl edit and not the CD one though)

milton parker (Jon L), Saturday, 1 October 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Fripp's playing here next week!

Sundar (sundar), Saturday, 1 October 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

that Sensational track is great, MindinRewind, is the rest of the album that good?

It's a LONG album, or at least it feels that way when listening to it (21 tracks, 72 minutes). It's better to enjoy Sensational in 10 track, 40 minute sittings. But yes, the album ("Corner the Market") is chock full of tracks just like the one I posted.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 1 October 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

Sundar, FYI, all he does live now is soundscapes. (I wish I could go.)

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 1 October 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Dennis Wilson - Bamboo

JaXoN (jaxon), Monday, 3 October 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

Julio, holy fuck. i just got around to listening to that chico buarque track you posted. is the rest of the album as rad as that? at first it seemed like just a normal, nice bossa track, and then the spy horns and orchestra came in. wow.

JaXoN (jaxon), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that track is outstanding

I'm catching up with that Nono you posted, too, it's noisy

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

jason overall its an excellent alb and well worth getting if you see it -- as I recall the turmoil and rage is reserved for some of the first half but the rest is all gorgeous bossa-like (soundwise anyway).

yes, the nono is outstanding. few riot sounds working with the noisy electronics. again, lots of turmoil...construcao is from '71 and the nono track is from '69.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

(but in terms of songwriting/exquisite arrangement that is the best cut from the buarque)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

Laurie Spiegel - Sound Zones from Unseen Worlds, 1994

milton, I got the reissue of the OHM electronic music box the other day, and it has a DVD with tons of cool stuff on it, including a 1977 performance by Spiegel. You need to own this like today

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:26 (twenty years ago)

reissuing BOX SETS with extra material = dud

still, I will re-buy this. like a tool. it doesn't seem to be out yet, I wish I could own it like today.

Spiegel's a big hero. Her essays on her website are razor sharp, and Unseen Worlds is super-classic head-fried gone.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Zorn's tribute to morricone has been widely (and rightly) praised but not much on his version of schoenberg's "pierrot lunaire". There are a few differences: the instrumnetation, the vocals, and I'm sure there's a bit of room for some improv, and def some wacky stuff (wind machine).

part eleven

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Julio for all the boss postage
