goole, Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:21 (thirteen years ago)

can i just clear up the apparent situation here, is it in fact the case that i'm arguing "hey like be willing to think about how you think about women if you're trying to respect women irl" and people are saying "nah dogg"

steening in your HOOSless carriage (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:22 (thirteen years ago)

i missed that thread tho ;_; but iirc we covered basic ground on the noted hoos hotel kickout thread of yore

I gave it a good eye roll this morning and have just been following this thread for my own entertainment, I don't have time for all the soft-brained idiots in the world. Or, well, I do actually have time but I used it to make sweet tea and clean my bathroom instead.

"hey honey, how was work today? oh me? uh, nothing much. well, i have been working on that article, i think i have an editor at slate willing to publish. yeah, it is pretty great. oh it's not about much. just about... guy stuff, i guess. you'll read it when it comes out, right?"

⚓ (elmo argonaut), Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:59 (thirteen years ago)

for me at least its that this guy is essentially just an MRA. or a like mirror-image MRA, like the whole schtick--and the writer he quotes, schwyzer, is like this too--is totally consistent with the MRA vision of the world, he just personally slots himself in the "beta" position

max, Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:28 (thirteen years ago)

I was going to leave Schwyzer out of it but...yeah. To call him a controversial feminist is conveniently eliding everything but the tag line.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:30 (thirteen years ago)

also like. surely there was... a woman feminist you could have called.

max, Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:31 (thirteen years ago)

Or perhaps not, if the effect you want is for them to air THEIR sexual fantasies to the general public. I thought that part was particularly odious.

well, he did contact Joanna Schroeder first

they are either militarists (ugh) or kangaroos (?) (DJP), Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:34 (thirteen years ago)

one part of it is that, for all the rhetoric of self-actualization, he is performing a role of powerlessness over himself, which has the end of excusing himself for whatever he thinks his sins are.

the MRA bros (and plenty of other men) will say "my ogling his hard wired! it's biology! i can't not look! you can't hold me down!"

and this guy's version is "ugh there are so many rules to being a good person, i can't live up to it! i'm such a problem!"

tbph i p much skimmed the dude's article

goole, Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

theres that whole "dude feminist" population led by schwyzer who seem intent on treating feminism as a phenomenon that primarily affects them and their lives. or like, who seem unable to write about it without using it as a plot device through which they can work out their sex neuroses in public

max, Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Max, I want to cross-link your last post to the thread somewhere about white male academic novelists where I rant about that book in which the professors who are all sleeping w each other have breakfast in a diner and end up floating around the room with the hot young waitress.

lets just remember to blame the patriarchy for (in orbit), Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:39 (thirteen years ago)

to date i'm not aware of a feminism that has pathologized the experience of male heterosexual attraction itself. i know that's what 'they' say about dworkin and butler et al but not having read either of them directly much, i'm inclined to doubt it.

the entire article is a transparent "hey ladies, I think you're hot" bat signal, which is what makes it so annoying

goole otm - the guy highlighting all the hoops he's supposed to jump through is his way of implying the absurdity and unfairness of his having to do so. he's regurgitating some standard (albeit warped) feminist language to build up his cred so he can basically reach the conclusion of "i'm trying, but i am what i am!"

k3vin k., Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

I’m a stay-at-home dad to twin 4-year-old girls who are already smarter than me, and my wife is a brilliant doctor who kicks ass and saves lives every day. I grew up with big sisters and a mom whose authority was unbreachable. I celebrate every inroad that women make into business, technology, science, politics, comedy, you name it, and I get angry about “slut-shaming” or “stereotype threat” or whatever is the affront du jour. my cock too is a thing to behold. my gf measured it at 8.5 in of dark brown veiny mexican cock. uncut, of course. it took her about 2 yrs to be able to swallow it all. but she perfected the art of deep throating my shlong. i've seen other guys at the urinals and they see me. i'm blessed with a flaccid cock measuring almost 7 inches. most guys have little peepees peeking out of their flies. i have a snake. thank u very much!

I've read arguments that Dworkin is not in fact pathologizing the experience of male heterosexuality but rather pathologizing male heterosexuality as it occurs within the patriarchy (and is constituted by male supremacist culture. I'm not sure I completely buy that explanation though. She clearly suggests that "male-dominant gender hierarchy" is "immune to reform," that within the context of that hierarchy intercourse is always a violation, and that if you believe that "intercourse itself determines women's lower status," the only way out is through the use of modern reproductive technologies that evade intercourse entirely. That "intercourse appears to be the expression of [male] contempt in pure form, in the form of a sex hierarchy; it requires no passion or heart because it is power without invention articulating the arrogance of those who do the fucking."

Sorry, a little off-topic. nb everything Dworkin writes should probably be read in fuller context than I've given here so you can make up your own mind.

Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:58 (thirteen years ago)

By contrast I can't remember ever seeing Butler pathologize male heterosexual attraction.*

Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 20:59 (thirteen years ago)

agree with whoever said he started with a thesis in mind. it's telling that he practically begged to be able to attend a saa meeting and then just couldn't be bothered

slate follow-up:

Hinds' piece, written for Slate, takes it as a given that male lust is inherently disrespectful to women, apparently because Hinds himself cannot see women as anything but vaginas on legs. Actual feminist men see vaginas on legs and heads on shoulders.

Andy: It's okay to strip people naked in your imagination, as long as you respect their right to not know that's what you're doing. This is accomplished by not gawking, ogling, and drooling, but rather learning to be discreet. Nearly all women and a healthy percentage of men manage to do this every day.

this seems pretty otm to me

Mordy , Friday, 31 May 2013 16:49 (thirteen years ago)

yeah as i said before confessing this seems compulsive to me--it's like it didn't occur to him that this is something you can keep to yourself (and deal with it as a problem or not as you see fit). to make it public like this seems oddly aggressive, like holding eye contact with a stranger.

ryan, Friday, 31 May 2013 17:02 (thirteen years ago)

Actual feminist men see vaginas on legs and heads on shoulders.

I understand it's a reference to the previous sentence, but this still could have been worded better.

I personally have hair on my legs, a few scars...
