i'm not sure that quietly lusting over random strangers reifies the patriarchy as much as biology
― Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 14:53 (thirteen years ago)
its especially hard in the summer. the girls are wearing less clothes. you try not to think about it but you have those urges. what if i were just to step into that cafe over there, pull out my laptop, and start writing for slate. omg i could totally do that right now!

“I want to empower women, white women, to have the style of black women. You say anything to black women and she’s going to come back at you with humor, with scathing humor. These white women miss the humor of the banter and they miss how the black working-class women are able to put down any men, and to gain control through aggressive speech on the street. These white women want to be cool and they want to be silent. In my experience as a lesbian,” Ms. Paglia continued, “a very voyeuristic lesbian, I have to say that straight middle-class women seem to be totally clueless about their body language and the signals that they give sexually.”

unclear on you here: quietly lusting over random strangers reifies biology, or biology reifies the patriarchy?

“I often say to myself, ‘Oh, God! She’s so beautiful! I just feel like masturbating right now out of frustration!’” said Jonathan Ames, a novelist who wrote about such impulses in a recent column for the New York Press .

cause the notion here is that we have to talk about personal transformation if we're interested in social transformation, and that when it comes to quietly lusting over random strangers one can be playing a part in the upkeep of patriarchy if one's internal life is reinforcing all the usuals.
but like, work on developing female leadership in your organizations. don't write a slate essay.

who wants to critically examine their own sexual compulsions? nobody. except slate writers.
― crüt, Thursday, 30 May 2013 16:32 (thirteen years ago)
i feel like the motivation for writing this is basically part of his compulsion--he's clearly ratcheting up what was at one time probably normal checking people out kinda stuff into pathology in the pursuit of some kink.

― k3vin k., Thursday, 30 May 2013 16:59 (thirteen years ago)
xp to ryan, i was going to say something like that but it seemed too speculative. it's possible this guy just has really confused ideas about his own sexuality and how it intersects with patriarchal systems he opposes which, i mean, is understandable because that topic is a powderkeg. he is totally unqualified to write about this stuff for slate though.

i don't really know enough about that website to have a real opinion -- stopped reading when christopher hitchens died, not that i was a real fan of hitch anyway but he was an entertaining polemicist -- only that all of their articles get like 1,000 comments. this article's comment thread in particular is really bleak.
― the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:04 (thirteen years ago)
how does a hoos square his belief in personal transformation with the historical failure of religion to keep men from thinking impure thoughts & masturbation? fighting the biological imperative to fuck is basically warring on nature. maybe praiseworthy but ultimately quixotic?
― Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:05 (thirteen years ago)
"biological imperative"! mordy what happened to all your Theory
― max, Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:06 (thirteen years ago)
fucking feels good bc those who like to fuck the most are the most likely to reproduce which is why sex will continue to get better as history moves on - or so I learnt many years ago
― Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:07 (thirteen years ago)
xp why even praiseworthy though? i think the key thing is to get rid of the idea that mark loi put forth in his facebook comments in the OP that "wanting to see someone naked" and "respecting them as a person" are incompatible, or at the very least at odds in some way. that idea doesn't even make sense. it seems like sexists would think that way, not feminists.
― the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)
I was just throwing hoos a bone - I don't think it's praiseworthy.
― Mordy , Thursday, 30 May 2013 17:08 (thirteen years ago)
seems that people who have the best sex are those with lowest rate of reproduction/fucks

it's not about self-policing thoughts altogether, or anything like fighting the biological imperative. it's just about understanding the power differential and being mindful of the ways we can reproduce it or instead work to subvert it in our lives, whether in real interactions with women or in the interactions with women we allow ourselves to imagine.
― steening in your HOOSless carriage (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:05 (thirteen years ago)
towards an anti-sexist wanking
you could ask to what meaningful degree power relations matter in the fantasy space between your ears, but it seems to me and iirc studies have shown that the attitudes we cultivate and nurture have a real effect on the way we move through the world, so imo part of dismantling patriarchy means confronting and challenging it even when it appears in quiet lust over strangers.
― steening in your HOOSless carriage (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 30 May 2013 19:09 (thirteen years ago)
