If you're looking for great drama, you're certainly not going to get it in this movie. But if you're looking to go back to a place and time when you were a child, when you experienced your first kiss, your first CD and finally holding the girl of your dreams in your arm, this movie is it.

when people say that they are afraid their thoughts are "objectifying" women, it sounds like they have a horrible, magical affliction wherein every woman they stare at for too long turns to stone.
― the strange and important sound of the synthesizer (Treeship), Thursday, 30 May 2013 13:30 (thirteen years ago)
i don't really understand this guy's issue though. if he is at a place where he doesn't see personhood, intelligence, etc. and sexiness as contradictory wrt women, why does it matter if he has passing sexual thoughts about the women that he sees? how is that objectifying them? this seems more puritanical than feminist. the real issue with staring at women in public is that it makes them feel uncomfortable, so he should try to not do that if he isn't already, but this constant vigilance over what thoughts go through his mind seems like it would produce a lot of frustration.

I often feel like dudes who are all "omg I am tortured by my perverted sexual fantasies because of my feminism" are really looking for a way to tell all of the feminists they want to bone about their sexual fantasies

there's more than a family resemblance between them and the so-called "nice guys" feminists hate, who similarly seek female validation by insisting that they are more civilized, and less brutishly masculine than "most men".

A lot of tortured guys are just well-meaning and naive. A long time ago, I nervously confessed my disgusting and depraved thoughts to a girl and she was just like haha that is so tame. I had considered myself one of the great perverts of the universe.

i had the worst dream last night where i had non-consensual sex w/ a random mental projection. well, i'm not sure that it was non-consensual, but the construct didn't explicitly say 'yes' during the dream, at least at any point that i can remember. whew, it feels so good to get this off my chest.

"nice guys" who think they are nice guys shouldn't be called Nice Guys
― waterface, Thursday, 30 May 2013 14:10 (thirteen years ago)
I think that guy is an idiot. But I do think that if he really goes around all day eagerly looking for women (like he says, while driving past intersections) to discreetly ogle, that seems like a reasonable thing to be mindful of and maybe dial back, ask yourself why it's so consuming, etc. Just don't write a Slate article about it.

lol i read most of article with this half-articulated uncomfortable feeling that all this focus on the tremendous unwithstandable power to distract wielded by women on sidewalks in shorts was some kind of well-meaning ingrown parody of the taliban mentality, and then:
Instead of undressing them with my eyes, I’m cloaking them in imaginary burqas.

i mean i think there's room--maybe its even, like, super fucking important--for men to be conscious and critical of the degree to which their inner life reflects patriarchy. it doesn't mean you go all rev dimmesdale--or write slate essays--though, it means that if you know you have shit to work on, you work on your shit. as the saying goes.
this is a weird essay, obviously.

“I want to empower women, white women, to have the style of black women. You say anything to black women and she’s going to come back at you with humor, with scathing humor. These white women miss the humor of the banter and they miss how the black working-class women are able to put down any men, and to gain control through aggressive speech on the street. These white women want to be cool and they want to be silent. In my experience as a lesbian,” Ms. Paglia continued, “a very voyeuristic lesbian, I have to say that straight middle-class women seem to be totally clueless about their body language and the signals that they give sexually.”
