visualizing gainsbourg ironically unnerving the crowd to get em to toss some cash money on the stage and picking it all up very much unironically because he was poor, and mumbling to himself "so this is what they like ... i'll give em some more, then."

increasingly enjoying these alternate universe projections of my own teenagerhood by people who were babies at the time.

two weeks pass...

There's so much of this stuff (the music that the thread was originally about, not the other types of derivativeness immediately above) that it's hard to know what's noteworthy, but I like this comp: http://fortune500.bandcamp.com/album/the-music-of-the-now-age

Dan I., Thursday, 14 March 2013 05:57 (thirteen years ago)

Haha ok, and I guess Eco Virtual, who made this good "album" or whatever: http://ecovirtual.bandcamp.com/ is not the same thing as the Beer on the Rug artist 情報デスクVIRTUAL ???

Dan I., Thursday, 14 March 2013 06:07 (thirteen years ago)

oops you already mentioned eco virtual! Too much "virtual"

Dan I., Thursday, 14 March 2013 06:09 (thirteen years ago)

情報デスクVIRTUAL - iMYSTIQUE エジプト航空「EDU」
rad magma - distractions
Mensa Group International - r lyeh
Sacred Tapestry- cosmorama
LATE NIGHT DELIGHT - cant afford
laserdisc visions - third wave
bewilderbeast - human
fortune 500 - self-discovery

Sébastien, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:37 (thirteen years ago)

actually i am still sort of on the fence about bewilderbeast - human, but with "only" 2 "big" tracks (the opening one +r'lyeh) i felt it needed an extra splash of color.

Sébastien, Friday, 17 May 2013 05:41 (thirteen years ago)

i dig the cheap perfume of stuff like luxury elite, infinty frequencies, laserdisc visions

brimstead, Monday, 20 May 2013 03:08 (thirteen years ago)

Sébastien, I like the deep ambient trash angle you’re working w/ this mix, which curates a smidgeon of modernist avant functionalism to its post-everything pallet - is this where the purists bail f/ a more sternly ironic grade of po-faced plasticism that negates even stoner jouissance? (ambient almost by definition suffused w/ humanist ethos aka choking solemnity, though noize is technically ambient if still insufficiently profane).

feel like Eno, w/ parallel ambient/pop/no-wave tinkering casts a long shadow, which in itself is antithetical to v’wave’s crack binge of f5 hermaneutics, but some shit ambient deluxe from Alec Empire never hurts:

Sweet: http://youtu.be/QLqYN1oZ8go
Limited 05: http://youtu.be/_uEMpmuJ6nI
It Should Be You Not Me: http://youtu.be/36U--ieVc10

^^^
AE always delivers irony, but his trash traffics heavily in fetishized urban decay authenticity, granted, certainly not enuff Miami Vice keys + prob. at root oppositional to cutthroat chase of perpetually receding cathexis. (proto-v'wave excursion implodes epiphany, carry on).

what

ḉrut (crüt), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 12:48 (thirteen years ago)

thanks for the comment hellhouse, deep ambient trash is a good description to what i was going for - not a mix that is representative of the genre.

"deep ambient trash" otm.

i have to admit i was kind of thrilled to find this stuff, such brazen, consummate, overwhelming kitsch. this is what i wanted chillwave to be before it all just turned into indie. i think there's a core of numbness pulling at vaporwave which separates it from more blissful&beautiful [or sinister&dark] ambient or the triumph of far side virtual. there are hints of a subaqueous logic that might tie it all together, but a lot of these guys seem like loop monomaniacs & it's not helping them

ogmor, Friday, 5 July 2013 00:54 (twelve years ago)

my favorite vaporwave is kinda conspiratorial/cryptographic like UVB-76 - like junk arranged w. intention

Mordy , Friday, 5 July 2013 00:58 (twelve years ago)

vaporware's a cool concept I think for its brashness but it's just some shit to listen to for 5 secs really

I think some of Vektroid's releases are completely unaltered muzak tunes, not sampled, not looped, just the original song. I don't have a problem with this though

Dan I., Friday, 5 July 2013 18:04 (twelve years ago)

pretty into vaporwave atm

don't know this guy but
"Whether we're pushing our shopping cart through a retail store or sitting at an office desk laboring for a salary, somebody up there wants us to work harder, spend more money, and be a more productive cylinder in the engine of commerce. Might there be a simple way to get people to be more energetic, more creative, more generous; simply by manipulating their environment through something as simple as music? It has certainly been tried, and sold to the world's largest businesses. Commonly called by the name of its most recognizable vendor, muzak has long been the subject of scrutiny, science, and pseudoscience. Today we're going to see what it can do and what it can't."

people who are into vaporware should just like idk listen to madlib

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 02:09 (twelve years ago)

everyone should listen to madlib all the time though so it's not really vape-specific advice

18 Carat Affair is one of my favorites. I guess the Pure Gold album is like a best-of comp.

Dan I., Wednesday, 10 July 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

So I'm not sure if I even know what vaporwave is, but I feel like the new Mu-ziq album might be vaporwave-y?

Murder in the Rue McClanahan (jaymc), Wednesday, 10 July 2013 22:11 (twelve years ago)

one month passes...

because it already consisted of older sounds & textures I find this stuff weirdly durable. like, floral shoppe, at the top of this thread, is seventeen years old, but in a way, it sounds the same as it did in 2011. I listened to a lot of music in this rough zone back then and I seldom revisit it now, it felt like a moment, but when I do listen to some: it sounds just as good!

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Thursday, 11 June 2026 12:01 (five days ago)

Floral Shoppe is up there with Boards of Canada in the "often imitated but never equaled" category...which is not to say it's as good as any BoC album, in fact I'm not even sure it's a good album period, but there's something there nobody's really been able to capture
