actually i am still sort of on the fence about bewilderbeast - human, but with "only" 2 "big" tracks (the opening one +r'lyeh) i felt it needed an extra splash of color.

i have to admit i was kind of thrilled to find this stuff, such brazen, consummate, overwhelming kitsch. this is what i wanted chillwave to be before it all just turned into indie. i think there's a core of numbness pulling at vaporwave which separates it from more blissful&beautiful [or sinister&dark] ambient or the triumph of far side virtual. there are hints of a subaqueous logic that might tie it all together, but a lot of these guys seem like loop monomaniacs & it's not helping them

my favorite vaporwave is kinda conspiratorial/cryptographic like UVB-76 - like junk arranged w. intention

Someone had a little too much late night lofi last night

got an advance of the new Nmesh album. anyway I'm like 2/3 through it and its awesome. a masterpiece in sampling. he does way way more to the tracks now, everything's like "Mall Full of Drugs". but not in an exhausting way, more in a funny way I guess. theres a track about subliminal advertising that's got a few parts that made me laugh, just some of the shit he puts in there. you can forgive the long wait too, it's clear he worked on it a lot. its not really vaporwave but idk where else to put this :)

I've written about him in the past and a while ago he asked me if I wanted to hear it so I could write a bio for him. that was over a year ago so I am assuming a bunch of it was redone. anyway he got someone else to do it but sent me a copy anyway. since nothing's public I won't say what the title is but think the 50th state :)

because it already consisted of older sounds & textures I find this stuff weirdly durable. like, floral shoppe, at the top of this thread, is seventeen years old, but in a way, it sounds the same as it did in 2011. I listened to a lot of music in this rough zone back then and I seldom revisit it now, it felt like a moment, but when I do listen to some: it sounds just as good!

Floral Shoppe is up there with Boards of Canada in the "often imitated but never equaled" category...which is not to say it's as good as any BoC album, in fact I'm not even sure it's a good album period, but there's something there nobody's really been able to capture
