there's a bit in the "love, peace and poetry" liner notes about how they thought japanese psych sounded particularly unhinged because it was near impossible to get acid or pot in the 60s, so they had to make up for it by making the music and the scene extra-bizarre.

not sure if that's a reasonable hypothesis but it's a good soundbite.

I'm a noob to this shit and don't know much beyond the obvious but first I'd get everything by flower travellin and les rallizes denudes (like a noisier more fucked sounding japanese v.u., walls of feedback) and then go from there

I got that taj mahal travellers "august 1974" off mutant sounds a while back and wasnt totally into it but I know a lot of drone heads like those guys

blues creation is along the lines of atomic rooster or iron butterfly, heavy blues rock with breaks

(haven't read the book ... or the kraut book either .. probably should)

i have the kraut book and it's kinda funny to say the least.

my favorites going in were Kosugi & the Taj Mahal Travellers, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Joji Yuasa, Ichiyanagi, Group Ongaku & the Rallizes. Favorite things the book turned me onto were J.A. Caesar, Love Live Life + 1, Karuna Khyal & the 2nd Magical Power Mako 'Super Record' (which Cope is wrong to hate), and it was good to learn about FTB, Speed Glue & Shinki, Brast Burn, Masahiko Satoh & Soundbreakers

Jaxon, knowing your tastes you should check out that outstanding Love Live Life + 1 record. 60's psychedelic garage but completely overdriven. & if you're into Residents / Faust, that Karuna Khyal CD is pretty mutant

love live life + 1 is fucking awesssome. there's a jazz thing going on there, too, it isn't straight-up psych by any means.

fwiw even though rallizes "heavier than a death in the family" is listed as "live 73-77" it seems like it is 90% the same as "77 live" (77 live has a couple extra tracks ... one of em 20 mins that takes up the bulk of disc 2)

that kuni kawachi + ftb record is good too

that music de wolfe comp is amazing. i've got some other comps of library music (sound gallery 1+2 are the first that come to mind) and de wolfe is just light years better.
