Is the connection that Sonic Youth did those avant-garde SYR albums, thus if you are a fan, you should be familiar with modernist composers? I'm not getting the logic. SY doesn't sonically owe much to Xenakis, or more precisely, there are a half dozen other 20th Century avant-garde composers they have strong connections to in terms of sound and/or influences (e.g. Rhys Chatham, LaMonte Young)

Large sections of the audience were booing when I saw Sonic Youth perform pieces from 'Goodbye 20th Century' in London, so I wld say that many of their fans are indifferent, if not downright hostile, to modern classical composition (just as i wld be surprised if many of em had heard of beaver harris, say)

i'm just curious what kind of lex or tuomas-type rep i apparently have among some people about making a show of not knowing things

would imagine it's less about any flauging and more about a perceived self-satisfaction at ur own uninquisitiveness and what might be seen as a resultant snide comfy conservatism

I thought it was about "I don't know who that is" instead of implying everyone should be familiar with everyone's works. Hence the Tuomas thing.

I thought it was about someone fundamentally failing to understand this thread's premise.

Late to the party, but sarahell otm -- what the fuck is the supposed connection Xenakis vs Sonic Youth? Claiming that ppl who love P should know about Q seems like the worst type of history- and/or quotemongering at the expense of actually paying attention to the music. I love X and uhm respect the Y, but any musical connection the two might have is beyond me (probably because it is nonexistent, what?).

anatol, i think people might be zeroing in on this because some dude is a) a professional music writer, b) one of ILX's most omnivorous music listeners and chronic list-makers. I don't think there would even be a conversation if some random dope who likes sonic youth didn't know who xenakis is.

And c) they're his favorite band!
