the vmic is for the not knowing (and suggestion of MOR sensibilities) rather than for the admission

not really sure about this, i think it would be nice if more ppl knew who xenakis was but it's so far from some dude's brief that it doesn't really matter

"don't know; don't care" is a thoroughly defensible position wrt most of human culture.

"I don't know" versus "I'm not familiar" imo, it's 2012, anyone can know who someone is without having to claim knowledge

Someone who has created several dozen (40+?) ILM polls dedicated to Sonic Youth and who does not know who Xenakis is more "kinda surprising" rather than "in character" imho.

if someone wants to point me to a thread where they or someone else can school me on xenakis i'm up for learning. the context of my post was that i linked a review that made some points i agreed with, someone else strenuously disagreed with other parts of it having to do with xenakis, and i was like ok fair enough that's outside my purview.

Is the connection that Sonic Youth did those avant-garde SYR albums, thus if you are a fan, you should be familiar with modernist composers? I'm not getting the logic. SY doesn't sonically owe much to Xenakis, or more precisely, there are a half dozen other 20th Century avant-garde composers they have strong connections to in terms of sound and/or influences (e.g. Rhys Chatham, LaMonte Young)

Large sections of the audience were booing when I saw Sonic Youth perform pieces from 'Goodbye 20th Century' in London, so I wld say that many of their fans are indifferent, if not downright hostile, to modern classical composition (just as i wld be surprised if many of em had heard of beaver harris, say)

yeah, the Xenakis criticism is ridiculous. "you start multiple polls about the beatles, and you don't even know the complete works of Pierre Schaeffer? you understand the origins of Revolution 9, don't you? shameful."

i'm just curious what kind of lex or tuomas-type rep i apparently have among some people about making a show of not knowing things

would imagine it's less about any flauging and more about a perceived self-satisfaction at ur own uninquisitiveness and what might be seen as a resultant snide comfy conservatism

I thought it was about "I don't know who that is" instead of implying everyone should be familiar with everyone's works. Hence the Tuomas thing.

I thought it was about someone fundamentally failing to understand this thread's premise.
