speaking of lurkers and forgetting about them: the other week i was talking to my sister about the young people and their constant living online and how when they age into adults it's going to be into a world where all the embarrassing shit they do as kids that gets recorded forever on the internet maybe won't seem like such a big deal because it's going to be that way for everyone.
and i said, seeing as how i am looking for a new job outside of "arts journalism," where you can pretty much be a perverted d-bag lunatic drug addict and still get work if you can write and have connections, sometimes (usually) even if you can't write, i said something like, you know, i've said some pretty fucked up/weird/potentially controversial things in reviews/pieces/essays/articles over the years, it'd be pretty easy for some potential employer to google me and see something that rubs him/her the wrong way, politically or socially or whatever, and say that's that.
then she said something to the effect of "i'd probably be more worried about all the crazy bullshit you've posted to ilx over the years."
my heart kinda dropped through my stomach for multiple reasons at that moment.

one of these days enbb will realise her irl friend "k-mac" is none other than roberto spiralli wearing an elaborate disguise.
― estela, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)
but did you at one point attend a mountain goats show at sonar, this is killing me
― slam dunk, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)
yeah strongo i've posted stuff to ilx i wouldnt necessarily want my closest to read, but it'd be easy for them to be doing so right now i guess..

ive seen ilxors a couple of times at shows and always felt incredibly embarrassed by even the idea of going up to someone and telling them i know them from the internet

this is awesome, it's like a grand conspiracy that repels everyone in it from each other
― before and after broscience (goole), Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:47 (thirteen years ago)
actual answer to earlier question: i have 'turned on' several ppl to ilx accidentally ("what do you keep looking at?") and i know they lurk still and if i can do it so can thousands of others
― slam dunk, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:48 (thirteen years ago)
what about the deep lurkers who don't even know they're lurking
― Nilmar Honorato da Silva, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:50 (thirteen years ago)
anyway, yes dude, i believe i was at a mountain goats show at sonar in late 2007, after i moved but before i moved back.

― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 December 2012 15:57 (thirteen years ago)

What up, K-Mac. How was life at F0rdham?
― pplains, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:02 (thirteen years ago)
K-Mac and Omar Little were friends at FU and almost lived together but then Omar Little transferred schools. I know this because OL recognized him from FU and one day msg'd me and said, "So, uh, I think I know your friend." True story.

ILX and real life weird collision shit. The other one of that I've had is that I briefly lived with a girl when I first moved here to Boston who, as it turns out, JJJusten dated irl in MN.

i found out a couple years back that a longtime poster knows/knew the person involved in one of the most embarrassing stories i ever told on ilx. that was fun.

"eleven, that's how big they are"
― am0n, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
I did a poll once to try and figure out how many lurkers there were and not many lurkers voted
it was not scientific but it makes me a little skeptical of the 'big lurker' theory
― iatee, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:19 (thirteen years ago)
you need an account to vote tho right?

how frequently do you post on ilx?
― iatee, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:21 (thirteen years ago)
scoff away it will overtake you, the tide of lurkers, they're in your job, your family, your commute, your social circle, your dating pool...swarming like ants on a felled popsicle
― slam dunk, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:23 (thirteen years ago)
The weirdest connection I have on here is with dmr. His Facebook feed is a combo of ilxors and college friends of mine who I haven't seen in 20 years.
"Oh hey, there's cutty and my ex-girlfriend replying to each other about a sushi restaurant. Makes perfect sense."

not sure if youre say what i think youre saying but those stats just refer to if someone came to ilx via a link not registered/unregistered lurker/non lurker or w/e
― lag∞n, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:36 (thirteen years ago)
an IRL friend saw me and another ilxor mention "forksclovetofu" in fbook comments once and was like "hey you know forksclovetofu? I know forksclovetofu!" it turned out he just recognized forks's name from lurking metafilter and that was it. then he asked me how I knew forks and I just said "a message board" "which one?" "it's called ILX"and the conversation ended there.
2 months later we're hanging out and he goes "I've gotta confess something, ive been lurking ILX and it feels like I'm stalking you. I know you're currently banned but I haven't figured out why."
same dude has complained to me every so often that he's tried to register and never gotten his confirmation emailed to him. I didn't have the heart to tell him the mods probably assumed from his ip that it was me attempting to register a sock :(

the reg system should def be more open imo
― iatee, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:39 (thirteen years ago)
back when there was a table of top 50 most frequent posters i drew a graph, looked like it would have a really long tail. great story, thx.
― ledge, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:41 (thirteen years ago)
yeah I think that makes sense and I bet the same is true w/ lurkers
― iatee, Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:43 (thirteen years ago)
ha unless other mods do otherwise, i would never yank a reg because i thought it was a sock, i am a firm believer in sock culture
― Dave Whobeck? (jjjusten), Thursday, 6 December 2012 16:48 (thirteen years ago)
yankin on the reg
