I was going to do a scrotum reference but the health info behind avocados didn't support it

I've seen much weaker (and blander) lists than this - I like a bunch of stuff here.

i have no idea who Iannis Xenakis is so i won't argue with that

eh if i'm out of my depth i'd rather admit it straight up (without being all Tuomas and asking someone to explain it for me) than run to wiki and pretend i know so i can keep arguing. more people on ilx could stand to take that approach imo.

some dude, Thursday, 3 January 2013 18:05 (thirteen years ago)

although i also don't know who clouds is or why they think me bowing out of a convo because i'm unfamiliar w/ a composer is so very much in character

The Queen Is Dad (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 January 2013 18:15 (thirteen years ago)

it's more the subtext of "don't know; don't care" that is ic than anything specific

silver pozole (clouds), Thursday, 3 January 2013 18:17 (thirteen years ago)

the vmic is for the not knowing (and suggestion of MOR sensibilities) rather than for the admission

not really sure about this, i think it would be nice if more ppl knew who xenakis was but it's so far from some dude's brief that it doesn't really matter

"don't know; don't care" is a thoroughly defensible position wrt most of human culture.

Musty In Memphis (Old Lunch), Thursday, 3 January 2013 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

"I don't know" versus "I'm not familiar" imo, it's 2012, anyone can know who someone is without having to claim knowledge

mh, Thursday, 3 January 2013 18:23 (thirteen years ago)

that's an interesting thought, Old Lunch, feel free to expand upon it

Someone who has created several dozen (40+?) ILM polls dedicated to Sonic Youth and who does not know who Xenakis is more "kinda surprising" rather than "in character" imho.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 4 January 2013 00:53 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, that's exactly what I thought
And also: hey some dude, you'd really like Xenakis

internet would be cooler if people were more chill about admitting when they don't know stuff. it's not a crime.

some dude, Friday, 4 January 2013 02:39 (thirteen years ago)

if someone wants to point me to a thread where they or someone else can school me on xenakis i'm up for learning. the context of my post was that i linked a review that made some points i agreed with, someone else strenuously disagreed with other parts of it having to do with xenakis, and i was like ok fair enough that's outside my purview.

some dude, Friday, 4 January 2013 02:40 (thirteen years ago)

I really enjoyed this thread on Xenakis fwiw:

xp - i'm curious about the review

sarahell, Friday, 4 January 2013 02:48 (thirteen years ago)

Noun
1. The scope of the influence or concerns of something.
2. A range of experience or thought.

as a 40-poll sonic youther I urge you to investigate xenakis as per def #1 is is squarely in your purview

mh, Friday, 4 January 2013 03:00 (thirteen years ago)

I mean if you actually made like 39 polls or something though, just go listen to some Ciccone Youth or something

mh, Friday, 4 January 2013 03:01 (thirteen years ago)

well i meant it in the 'range of experience' way in that i had personally not experienced any learning about the guy. but yeah i will keep an open mind.

it was a radiohead review btw

some dude, Friday, 4 January 2013 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

I didn't get the impression of sd being 'proud' of not knowing this, so feel like this entry isn't valid, but ymmv

NINO CARTER, Friday, 4 January 2013 04:30 (thirteen years ago)

to be fair, knowing some dude's taste to the limited extent that i know it, i do not think he would like xenakis.

turds (Hungry4Ass), Friday, 4 January 2013 04:50 (thirteen years ago)

Is the connection that Sonic Youth did those avant-garde SYR albums, thus if you are a fan, you should be familiar with modernist composers? I'm not getting the logic. SY doesn't sonically owe much to Xenakis, or more precisely, there are a half dozen other 20th Century avant-garde composers they have strong connections to in terms of sound and/or influences (e.g. Rhys Chatham, LaMonte Young)

sarahell, Friday, 4 January 2013 06:17 (thirteen years ago)

Large sections of the audience were booing when I saw Sonic Youth perform pieces from 'Goodbye 20th Century' in London, so I wld say that many of their fans are indifferent, if not downright hostile, to modern classical composition (just as i wld be surprised if many of em had heard of beaver harris, say)
