post brilliantly in character:

When Dicky CHeney heard the law had been upheld he wept, then took off his pants and undies and showed up at a local McDOnalds and said "FILL me up with your fatty fatty greacakes! I want a chicne! I want grease of the lamb! Obama will serve me my stomach as thine ham!"

2 weeks pass...

WCC referenced the "CaptainLorax debacle" on another thread, so I decided I'd look into it. What a depressing read, though I found crut to be pretty OTM throughout. Also weird how everyone assumes that the Captain is this ultra-hegemonic straight dude -- I assumed that his half-baked musings on gender had at least something to do with his documented attraction to androgynous women.

Forrest Gump is superior because of its use of computer graphics. However, since technology has advanced, both films are obsolete and must be destroyed.

Larry grew a full beard, but that was a smidge too country—“I looked like an Oak Ridge Boy”—so he pruned it down into a goatee. Paired with a baseball cap and sleeveless shirt, these days Larry looks like he has just exited a Golden Corral buffet. He has redneck gravitas.

am0n, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 14:41 (thirteen years ago)

well sometimes the "X" really isn't designed to hurt anybody and almost all these posters who are dialing up the outrage meter are not part of that minority anyway, so it just devolves into self-congratulatory "you are so stupid and a horrible person" for 1000 posts

Just putting this here as a reminder, of whenever this bloke complains he's unfairly persecuted, hateful assumptions and shit EXACTLY LIKE THIS is the ~actual reason~ why he gets called on stuff so often.

hateful assumptions like what, WCC? please elaborate :)

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

if you need help, I think the "anyone who uses the word 'uppity' is definitely making a racial slur" hardman stance so many posters were taking several months ago is a pretty good example of what I was talking about

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:23 (thirteen years ago)

1) making assumptions about what people "get" to be outraged about. Not your call to make.
2) making assumptions about what minorities people on ILX, that you have never met, belong to. Also not your call to make.
3) the big one: That only people who are members of minorities are "allowed" to call out hateful shit as opposed to, y'know, anyone who is a decent human being has not just a right but a moral duty to address inequality when they see fit.

I keep hitting flag post but you just don't go away. You have officially made me regret ever asking for the change to be made.

I'm not telling anyone what they should and should not be outraged about or what they are allowed to call out. I'm just saying that it doesn't lead to intelligent discussion. We've gone over this plenty of times and hasn't led to ANYTHING but a bunch of people feeling hurt and vowing to never post again (that's you, btw) (okay, I did legitimately learn about why there's a "certain word" you shouldn't say, so thank you guys for that). Also I'm not sure you understand what the word "almost" means so at this point I'm just going to say your reading comprehension sucks. At least am0n is on the ball!

Your idea of "intelligent discussion" seems "everyone always agrees with Frogbs and no one ever calls him on the offensive and untrue shit he comes out with."

I don't often say things like this, but seriously. If you don't think that the discussion on ILX that you get involved with is intelligent, you might want to look in the mirror.

Queue de Cheval (White Chocolate Cheesecake), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:42 (thirteen years ago)

That's not true. There's plenty of intelligent discussion on here and people rarely agree with me on anything. I've learned a few things along the way. However there are a lot of posters who just straight-up aren't willing to accept that other viewpoints exist or use THAT as a springboard for massive character judgements on issues that they barely understand themselves. Not "here's what's wrong with what you said" but rather "here's what's wrong with what I hope you meant".

frogbs, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

is it just me or does this feel like some sort of marvel dc xover battle

Authorities don't know who shot the 50 Cent the goose. (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:31 (thirteen years ago)

As I see it, Frogbs, there are two things going on here:

1) There is a difference between a Viewpoint and a Prejudice. The difference is that a Viewpoint is usually accompanied by either direct personal experience of an issue, or study and careful interpretation of evidence relating to that issue. A Prejudice has no basis except "Well, I believe that..." People on ILX are often accepting of multiple Viewpoints, but they do not have a duty to accept Prejudices.

2) You do not seem to understand that there is a difference between "You need to check your Privilege" and "You are the worst person forever." The former is a nice way of saying "of the people in this debate, one is speaking from a Viewpoint based on direct personal experience and the other is not. You might want to examine if you have a Viewpoint or a Prejudice before you go making any further assertions about things they have experienced and you have not."

The latter is what people say to you when you carry on insisting that you are being censured by "OMG the PC police" because you cannot tell the difference between your right to a Viewpoint and a Prejudice. Or because you persist in espousing the false belief that it is somehow making a "character judgement" about you, personally, to suggest that you might be the recipient of Privilege, rather than a statement about power dynamics within a society.

the false belief that it is somehow making a "character judgement" about you, personally, to suggest that you might be the recipient of Privilege, rather than a statement about power dynamics within a society.

To be fair A TON of basically nice people miss this point all the time. A ton. Possibly most. In all kinds of intersectionalities.

I see you, Pineapple Teef (DJP), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 17:39 (thirteen years ago)

Haha. I don't say that to undermine WCC's point, btw, I say it to reinforce that having someone point out that you can AFFORD not to be aware of things that hurt others, is not the same thing as being accused of hurting them yourself.

But if you CONTINUE to let them get hurt and not see them as part of your web, which is a web of everyone, THEN in the future you are increasingly complicit in their harm because you do benefit from people of other types/groups/populations being kept down. I mean almost everyone benefits somehow from someone else being kept back or kept down. All we are saying is, lift them up.

So you're just assuming that nothing I say is a "direct personal experience of an issue, or study and careful interpretation of evidence relating to that issue"? Is that a viewpoint, or a prejudice? I'm confused.
