One thing I love about A Hopkins' speech in SOTL is the way he uses an alveolar flap instead of a retroflex lateral /r/ in "Clarice." V memorable!

If you don't get the idea of things I try to explain then by all means keep on complaining about something that you think I'm suggesting. But don't blame me for your interpretations. If you need to blame me for something, and it appears that some of you might, try blaming me for not explaining things very coherently instead of jumping to conclusions about what you think I'm saying.

Poll Closing Date: Thursday, June 28, 2012 8:00 PM (in 2 days)
For the past few weeks, I've been polling the best of the songs that hit #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks. (The latest poll, for 2007, can be found here.)
I thought I would take a break this week and do a poll for the songs that didn't quite hit the top, and instead peaked at #2. By my count, roughly 150 songs have stalled in the silver-medal position since the Alternative chart was created in 1988. Below are 30 of the most notable #2 hits from across the years that struck me as significant.
With that, what's the best Modern Rock #2 of all time?
1989 – The Cult, "Fire Woman"1989 – The Cure, "Lovesong"1990 – Jesus & Mary Chain, "Head On"1990 – Chris Isaak, "Wicked Game"1991 – Divinyls, "I Touch Myself"1991 – The Las, "There She Goes"1992 – R.E.M., "Man on the Moon"1993 – Lenny Kravitz, "Are You Gonna Go My Way?"1993 – Radiohead, "Creep"1993 – Bjork, "Human Behaviour"1993 – Breeders, "Cannonball"1994 – Counting Crows, "Mr. Jones"1994 – Soundgarden, "Black Hole Sun"1994 – Stone Temple Pilots, "Vasoline"1994 – Weezer, "Buddy Holly"1994 – Pearl Jam, "Betterman"1995 – Stone Roses, "Love Spreads"1995 – Oasis, "Live Forever"1995 – Collective Soul, "December"1995 – Foo Fighters, "This is a Call"1995 – Smashing Pumpkins, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings"1996 – Spacehog, "In the Meantime"1997 – No Doubt, "Don’t Speak"1998 – Green Day, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)"1999 – Fatboy Slim, "Praise You"1999 – Blink 182, "What's My Age Again?"2000 – Incubus, "Stellar"2002 – Jimmy Eat World, "Sweetness"2005 – Queens of the Stone Age, "Little Sister"2006 – Muse, "Starlight"

post brilliantly in character:
When Dicky CHeney heard the law had been upheld he wept, then took off his pants and undies and showed up at a local McDOnalds and said "FILL me up with your fatty fatty greacakes! I want a chicne! I want grease of the lamb! Obama will serve me my stomach as thine ham!"

2 weeks pass...
WCC referenced the "CaptainLorax debacle" on another thread, so I decided I'd look into it. What a depressing read, though I found crut to be pretty OTM throughout. Also weird how everyone assumes that the Captain is this ultra-hegemonic straight dude -- I assumed that his half-baked musings on gender had at least something to do with his documented attraction to androgynous women.

Forrest Gump is superior because of its use of computer graphics. However, since technology has advanced, both films are obsolete and must be destroyed.

Larry grew a full beard, but that was a smidge too country—“I looked like an Oak Ridge Boy”—so he pruned it down into a goatee. Paired with a baseball cap and sleeveless shirt, these days Larry looks like he has just exited a Golden Corral buffet. He has redneck gravitas.
