I just thot it was cute you guys rank this as universally familiar as "Black Hole Sun" or "The Night They Invented Champagne."

(but I really can't figure how these genres caught on with teh str8 ppl, unless stenc's poppers joek means he was at the Ninth Circle doin 'research')

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

don't get all blount on me, morbs.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

xtal is song #3 on mine

o.Ò

am0n (am0n), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Aphex Twin is kind of a ROCKIST electronic music, tho. Indie rockers who wouldn't be caught dead listening to Luomo or whatever still jerk off to the Chris Cunningham Directors Series DVD.

WTF is "The Night They Invented Champagne"?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

i much prefer "green calx", "ptolemy" and "heliosphan" (my three favorites, in order)

"we are the music makers" - always thought this would sound awesome w/ sade singing over it.

"delphium" = honorable mention for heavy detroit techno vibes

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:45 (nineteen years ago)

and yeah, SAW85-92 is great, but where's the love for polygon window?!? THAT was the best aphex shit ever, believe.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

sinker's awesome breakdown of techno as the secret bastard lovechild of "novelty music" (christmas singing cats, songs w/ cuckoo clocks, sound effects in pop songs, baby elephant dance, etc) to thread.

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

sorry, WRONG THREAD

HUNTA-V (vahid), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

i love polygon window too.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:49 (nineteen years ago)

if only jaymc knew as much about music as he did ILX0rs.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

i might have the ATwin at home from my 'dutiful' phase.

Gigi, jaymc.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ah. Never seen it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

And the venerable Steve Shasta is right -- I really don't know that much about music at all.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

no it's just silly revisionist statements like the your choice quote above typical of autoscripted ILX conjecture-wank.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

Wait, what?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

I can't tell what you're taking issue with. At first I thought it was my ignorance of Gigi, and I was like, fair enough, there's really a whole lot of music I've never heard, that's something I'll totally own up to, etc. ... But now I'm wondering whether it's the first part of my post about Aphex Twin vs. Luomo. I'm certainly not damning Aphex Twin -- I joined in the chorus saying that "Xtal" is great -- but I do think that RDJ, like most practitioners of "IDM," makes the kind of electronic music that rock fans often gravitate toward. I mean, you go to Reckless Records in Chicago, and their electronic section is mostly AFX, Squarepusher, Mouse on Mars, etc. That's all I'm saying. Morbius's comment that he found it odd for straight people to be listening to "these genres" was just really weird to me, since my stereotype of an Aphex Twin fan is, like, TOMBOT.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

YES to your last point. i guess i don't confuse ILX tendencies with active music listeners i converse with "IRL" (aside from jaxon but we all know how nuts he is).

but i like "xtal" a lot, or i did when i made this dumb thread.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

wait, millar is straight?

and what (ooo), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

man i hope tombot doesn't see this thread. his techno credentials go far further than a lot of britishes, even.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

You're conflating my points. One of the token electronic acts for rock dudes is Aphex Twin. But not all Aphex Twin fans are rock dudes. I'd wager that most Aphex Twin fans, however, are straight. TOMBOT = an Aphex Twin fan who is straight but who is not a rock dude.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

janga janga janga janga

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

gay vs. straight, techno vs. rockist... WHY CAN'T WE ALL GET ALONG?!?!?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

word.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

if we can WALK together why can't we ROCK together?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

you will have a looooong wait for an ILXor mocking you for not knowing Gigi.

so what's the str8 equiv of a poppers joke?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

i was totally gonna call him out as not being gay if he couldn't identify a song from a musical, morbs.

light beer, duh.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 9 November 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

85-92 is ruined forever, to me, because when i first listened to it, i expected another sawii

every note of this album spells disappointment

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Friday, 10 November 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

that 'rhubarb' track off saw II is my fave. I heard II before 85-92, too.

i really really hope you're joking. 85-92 is perfect.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 November 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

maybe, but i still hate it. and even if i didnt - sawii has aged better, i would even say its timeless

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:35 (nineteen years ago)

Saw2 is overrated, Saw8592 beats it up with eight drunken gods. I actually think fucking FSOL's Lifeforms is closer to "timeless" than Saw2, because it just sounds dated, whereas saw2 sounds like two hours of bullshit jerkoff sub-eno/glass beatless horseshit with about eight total minutes of fairly impressive engineering

the caustic window collection on rephlex has the best 40 seconds of audio rdj ever recorded really

I am one of those dudes who thinks that everything after ICBYD has been pretty much downhill with a promising blip of an EP before his mind was eaten by MetaSynth running on a PowerBook

"aged better" is a really weird thing to say about dance music

1. how is sawii dance music
2. arent you the guy who complained about 'lazy' music on some other thread

PRKLTR (flezaffe), Friday, 10 November 2006 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

1. well it's a really odd thing to say about any kind of music tbh
2. probably, I have also been called a "mr knowitall knownothing"

LISTEN U TURBO CROUTON (TOMBOT), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:02 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry if you really love saw2, I know a lot of people who do, I just think it's kind of crap personally, and I know crap

LISTEN U TURBO CROUTON (TOMBOT), Friday, 10 November 2006 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think it's crap, but it's over-rated and not nearly as good as 85-92, polygon window, or caustic window.

says the guy with the aphex username

cutty, Saturday, 18 September 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

This is not an Aphex related username. He has nothing to do with the Tregaskins! Jeez, do you just believe that Richard writes all electronic music, everywhere? Listen to the music, man, not the hype, or who you think wrote it, no matter whose name is on the publishing rights etc. etc. and so forth amen shit I gotta get a leg on if I'm going to this Rephlex party thing tonight.

listening to "Evil at Play" and uh what am I missing here? yeah he sampled it, it's library music so it's supposed to be sampled, clearly there's way more to the track than the sample, this is nowhere near what say Daft Punk and LCD Soundsystem do regularly

frogbs, Friday, 16 February 2024 15:16 (two years ago)

Yeah seems like a clickbait title do get people to check out his "how was it made" process which is frankly far more interesting (also the bulk of the video) and the reason I posted it here!

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Friday, 16 February 2024 15:31 (two years ago)

totally stupid, oh no he used a sample. I mean, no shit.

The video where they remake it in ableton or whatever is pretty cool, though!

Agree that this is probably the greatest song of all time
