the visvim flyn los i bought last year are one of my fave pair of shoes ive ever owned but fragile as fuck, like i think ive worn them maybe five times since i bought them and still managed to scuff them a little :(((

the ironic thing is that even though i get associated with that stuff i honestly have one pair of birkenstock bostons and one pair of clarks desert treks and then everything else is plain low top tennis shoes (stan smiths, nike tennis classic, nb procourts) simple high-tops like monochrome black or grey vans chukkas and nike court forces and tokis and a bunch of old school new balances in grey suede grandpa colorways

I am gonna buy mad Vans this summer. I know for this thread that doesn't even rate a mention but I've never had slip-ons before, I just think they are the way forward for my poor feet.

I have some tretorn slip-on shoes that are pretty ok

you should just buy the expensive chukkas imo - will last longer and look cooler

how much cheaper do you want to go on those chukka boots? i don't subscribe to the idea that more expensive is necessarily better but at the same time i agree with robyn's sentiment (at least i think this is the sentiment) that you dont want to compromise for cost on leather boots the way you might for a pair of tennies or slip-ons

i would suggest maybe looking at clarks desert boots but i'm not sure they're exactly something you want.

desert boots seem pretty ubiquitous nowadays but I was thinking of getting the version done by TOMS, unsure how I feel about owning shoes made by TOMS though

like, i've already looked in a few department stores and all their boots are like "oooh, nice leather" - they seem a little thin-skinned, a little too nice, for what's required here; that said i don't want like EXTREME HIKE-BOOTS

i bought some boots from a mens shoe shop the other day and the guy who sold them to me is was like "you can get stylish and waterproof, but you can't get stylish and insulated."

i had a pair of cole haan winter boots that i really love that ive had for at least 10 years but this winter has finally killed them and they dont make them anymore so i'm a bit at a loss because i need to replace them and most functional boots are really ugly

I think classic duck boots or some variation thereon are the best compromise.

I had to emergency buy myself some north face snow boots recently, being caught having to work late in the middle of a giant snowstorm with only my dress shoes and that being the best option at the nearby sporting goods store. They are great in terms of warmth and waterproofness but thick and clunky as fuck.

FWIW I made it for years with a pair of waterproof hiking boots before the waterproofing finally started to wear off.

the label says they're made by HH Brown but when i google i can't find them and it looks like that company is a conglomerate of a bunch of different footwear brands now?

anyway they're nothing i'd ever decide to buy on my own but the sales guy had me try them on and i really like them. they're not insulated but they're waterproof and look sharp enough to wear on a date or something.

These may be the ugliest shoes I've ever owned. It doesn't stop me from wearing them. I even bought a backup pair for when these wear out. Why? Excellent fit and comfort for walking and hiking.

I've been posting about and turning people onto Brooks Cascadias for years. Every year they get more comfortable and even uglier.
