slap bass and soprano sax and woodblock make 40-second stand against deep Thursday late-nite despair feelings (similar to Sunday Feelings)
impenetrable-by-jokes darkness and clothing
endless steamy manhole covers, it's 3 a.m. everywhere forever
lift the manhole cover, there's a framed, signed portrait of mel torme down there

The Night Court, Damage Control

I have to watch the intro again, but I swear that on one of the freeze-frames during the cast listing, you could see the VCR tracking off a little bit at the bottom.

pplains, Monday, 9 April 2012 16:57 (fourteen years ago)

also andrew, we should have a whole thread of those, related just to tv intros.

pplains, Monday, 9 April 2012 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

Not to cheapen that poetry, or anything.

It's a show I associate strongly with mid-80s me who was feeling certain ways but didn't yet know it was called depression. And the time of night and the look and feel of it all just fits right in there with all that. How did I watch so many episodes? Probably hundreds. Or 50 of them several times each. And how many times did I laugh? Probably not that much. And yet you continue watching. There were probably some good gags when they'd have the parade of then-current standup comics and character actors come in for a minute for the obligatory courtroom hearing.

this applies to me and:

night court
facts of life
small wonder
growing pains
step by step
perfect strangers
empty nest

lots of others. crazy.

I've talked before about how there were jokes made on Golden Girls that I didn't get until years and years later.

Same goes for Night Court. Once they gave Dan an erotic birthday cake and in a following scene, he comes out of the kitchen with the frosting all over his face. At the time, I laughed because, boy, was that Dan Fielding hungry for some cake! It wasn't until, I don't know, 1993 or something, I'm walking past Brady Commons on the way to a Psych class when all of a sudden it hits me, "OHHH, IT WAS A CUNNILINGUS JOKE."

Re opening themes, I'm a big fan of youtube user bobcnn2 (formerly bobtwcatlanta who was terminated for infringement complaints). I may have shared a link before on some thread, actually. He's painstakingly compiled them by year. Like "1985 TV Show Openings Part 2" and on and on. All the big shows are there, of course, but then you'll come across some little show that maybe lasted a season, and maybe it triggers something weird in you. Good stuff. Also what's weird watching these is how damn long some of those old intros were. Many were a full minute and a half.

andrew m., Monday, 9 April 2012 19:02 (fourteen years ago)

There were so many interstate Big Green Signs in those old intros. The 35W passing over Mary Tyler Moore's face. Indianapolis' on One Day at a Time. Seems like "Alice" had one.

I guess any show where a woman is pushing the metal to escape her tainted past, there were signs to warn us all where she was going.

I love the Night Court theme, and the way they'd always stage a big laugh line right before it started. Rest of the show is pretty drab.

Night Court was one of those shows I watched as a little kid where I'm pretty sure I had virtually no idea what was going on. Same with Cheers.

i don't believe in zimmerman (Hurting 2), Monday, 9 April 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

frasier was that show for me

swaghand (dayo), Monday, 9 April 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)

The prints he mailed for her to sign got chewed up by Markie's dog, as you can see by the damage! According to her personal assistant, Raquel Alvarez. Hahaha

andrew m., Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:45 (fourteen years ago)

Is Markie the type of woman who would, in an effort to conceal her slothful nature from her best fan, have her personal assistant, Rachel Alvarez, CHEW up a letter and blame the dog?

andrew m., Tuesday, 10 April 2012 14:59 (fourteen years ago)

She most certainly is not
