The San Francisco Police Department went above and beyond the call of duty to keep skaters out of Embarcadero. Walrus Man, Frisco Dyke, Terminator, and Officer Squirrel were a few of S.F.'s finest who were truly dedicated to their jobs. Officer Squirrel would strike from above, dropping from trees and jumping out from behind the wave. Walrus Man was too easily outrun, so he would wear a trench coat over his uniform and creep up on unaware skaters.

Yeah it's like he's bored with just ollieing huge gaps and doing big rails so he has to make it more interesting by bringing dork tricks into the mix. Dude is awesome.

yes! the infamous spin around the fire hydrant! - I agree, it is an awesome move & under-utilized even at the time. I think it was pretty much just Natas doing that, no?
btw, does anyone know what the song is that is playing in the Natas clip, or who it is by?

I was into whichever H-Street video featured the extended street sequence b/w Ron Allen & Matt Hensley. Natas & those guys were srsly pushing the envelope back then.
― tevin "ratt" campbell (Pillbox), Thursday, 30 April 2009 05:25 (fifteen years ago) link
Xposts: Natas was the first to do that at the time, and it was pretty much just him, kind of a mindblowing moment, that such a thing could be done (you hear a lot of stories of people trying to copy him and just not being able to do it).
― formerly: mehlt (Edward Saroyan), Thursday, 30 April 2009 13:18 (fifteen years ago) link
maybe creepy of me to point out, but . . . Damn, that Natas video is so similar to 80s gay porn- the prison setting, the crotch shot, the supertan, the bro-down touching and patting going on, the awkward dialogue- it's exactly like a million "intro to porn sequence" scenes from Falcon or William Higgins movies. Just sayin'

Hmmn, I'm going to have to think on that for awhile, actually.
(whoa, I did one of those backside 5-0 stall to front foot kick out's yesterday, entirely by accident).
If anyone cares this http://video.google.ca/videoplay?docid=-2750775636149876938&ei=jLr5SdSCGoHg-wGm5amPCw&q=ON+video+Natas&hl=en (from the very enjoyable, but sadly shortlived ON Video) has some pretty interesting background on Natas (and co.).

Oh man, Natas' mom - my cousin and I, being total 13 year old dorks, called information and got the listing for a "Kaupuas" in Santa Monica one day and ended up talking to her for a while. He wasn't home but she was super nice to us.

Hensley & Allen in the age of the no-comply:
Looking at these & the Natas clip, it is obvious that this was the transitional element b/w straight freestyle & street skating that would come to define the culture subsequently. Serious zeitgeist stuff. Who else at the time was this creative in terms of street skating? Mark Gonzalez, maybe, though he seems a bit more old-guard than these dudes.

For me the big mind-blowing shift to modern street skating was this:
It's from Public Domain, like the Vallely bit, but there's so much going on here, young dudes I had never heard of at the time, and I think it came earlier in the tape so it stuck out more.

xxpost: Good call on Public Domain, Vallely, Barbee & the rest of second-generation Bones Brigade. I totally forgot about them, but they were def right there with the H-Street crew back then. I dunno about Mullen, tho. Don't get me wrong, he is A+++, but I'm pretty sure he was still doing mostly straight freestyle at that time. That Plan B clip has to be from about 92/92, right?
― tevin "ratt" campbell (Pillbox), Friday, 1 May 2009 19:40 (fifteen years ago) link
from wiki:
His tenure at World Industries marked the beginning of a shift in his skating career from freestyle to street skating. He left the World Industries team to join Plan B, a super team made up of some of the high profile pros of that time. Throughout this period Mullen was learning from his idol Mike Ternasky, the Plan B founder, to adapt his freestyle skating form. This approach was first seen in the 1992 Plan B video Questionable, and ushered in a new era of street skating that took freestyle tricks which were traditionally done without rolling, or at slow speeds in a confined flat area, to a more varied terrain, often at speed and incorporating obstacles.
