haven't listened to manual of errors yet, but are the residents behind it too?
― cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 12 January 2009 21:37 (seventeen years ago)
i think it was his band the vestal virgins, which included eric feldman from captain beefheart. looks like the only snakefinger album with a credited residents appearance is 'chewing hides in the sound'.
snakefinger was sort of a member of the residents for a brief period anyway, right?
― all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Monday, 12 January 2009 22:17 (seventeen years ago)
Residents produced & played many instruments on Snakefinger's first two albums, chewing hides the sound & greener pastures. Snakefinger wasn't really ever a member, but played on many of their albums
just discovered the '19 mysterious tracks' Residents bootleg, rehearsals of Duck Stab / Commercial Album tracks played live in the studio, that's a necessary one
― Milton Parker, Monday, 12 January 2009 22:37 (seventeen years ago)
ok parts of manual of errors sounds like a fucked up django, which is pretty great. But yeah, the creepiness of greener postures isn't really there. I don't really have the stomach for most of the residents' shit, aisde from some of the commercial album, but I think what they did with the melodies in greener postures is great (my friend who gave me the album told me the residents ghost wrote most of it, so that's what I'm basing this off of). Thanks for all the music tho.

Nasa Voyager Recordings - Symphonies of the Planets (Box Set)
so what's the story with these? are these actual recordings of planetary music, or has there been some fiddling to make more "musical"?
― Dominique, Friday, 16 January 2009 19:13 (seventeen years ago)
http://www.neuroacoustic.com/nasa.html#NASA_more-info
These sounds are recordings of the interaction of the Solar wind and the Ionosphere of each of the outer planets. The resonance of these ions is exactly within the range of human hearing (20-20,000 Hz) - called by NASA "Ion Acoustic Waves". This means that nothing had to be done artificially to the sounds to hear them – They were the REAL "Music of the Spheres". Although there is no air in space, there is vibration. Space does not have the medium of air to carry the vibration to your ear, but the vibration is present. With the specialized recording equipment aboard Voyager, it became possible to record these amazing sounds for the first time and then hear them here on Earth.
Imagine his amazement and that of all of us when we heard these NASA Space Sound recordings that sounded like dolphins, whales, ocean, crickets, choirs, Tibetan bowls and monks chanting! Something in the core of the subconscious awakens and pays close attention to and in the presence of these sounds. These are some of the most powerful tools for healing, inner awakening and self change that Dr. Thompson has researched and produced. His Primordial Sounds™ are found on his Audio Programs, giving even more power to his musical sounds and other techniques used.
These were originally released on a label called 'Brain/Mind Research' with equally New Agey liner notes and marketed as theraputic tools, one CD for each planet. I found those remaindered in the early 90's and have listened to these a lot.
The skeptic is thinking the data's been clearly been processed by someone who grew up on Space Music in the same way that the guys who colorize the Hubble shots were influenced by 70's / 80's Space Art (i.e. I can hear digital reverb applied to certain components of the drone, so my guess is it's been layered somewhat). But this is so much more abstract than most space music I have no problem accepting that he's working with captured data & part of me can imagine that this could be an accurate representation of the way soundless vibrations move & develop in a vacuum.
there's also this, which is a lot crazier / closer to 'Forbidden Planet' than Music from the Hearts of Spacehttp://mutant-sounds.blogspot.com/2008/07/dr-fiorella-terenzi-music-from.html

yeah that album is pretty sweet. I think the vinyl of it can still be found, supposedly three times as many pressed as the Inerane LP (500 vs 1500)
that very last track where the trance loop gets super fast and then ends in some guitar chords back to the original melody is, fuckin, wild.

The Happiness Boys - 'Twisting The Dials', 1928: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ggxgjn
vaudeville comedy duo had a radio show, this was a two sided 78 single simulating the experience of channel surfing in 1928 w/ fake shortwave radio noise & mixing lots of different records together. maybe the first sampling / collage record.
