An Artist’s Words

To some eyes the words “Portslade Massif” scrawled in white emulsion paint across the window and wall of the Ink-d Gallery in Brighton, England, appeared to be the work of vandals. So the graffiti team employed by the Brighton and Hove City Council scrubbed them off, the BBC reported. The words were a slogan created by James Cauty to advertise his exhibition “The Rize and Fall of the Portslade Massif” at the gallery, which stands on private property. The erasure prompted Dan Hipkin, the gallery director, to ask, “Who holds the right to say what is and isn’t a form of expression?” He said he believed that the cleaners feared that the slogan, referring to the exhibition’s theme of gang culture, would ignite local gang warfare. The council called the removal a “genuine mistake.” Mr. Cauty, a member of the 1990s bands the KLF and the Orb, along with a bandmate, Bill Drummond, once burned £1 million ($2 million at today’s exchange rates) in KLF royalties.

i was reading the Tuareg wiki this morning and they specifically mentioned Tinariwen as being rebel musicians that came from this "scene".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuareg#Traditional_music

btw, it really is a great disc.

jaxon, Wednesday, 10 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty partial to this Tart1t album, "Abakab0k", as far as what little Tuareg music I've heard goes...

the vocals on this are like motherfuck a key! even still it's the best thing they've done. love "mannequin" and the whole minimalist downer disco vibe.

I know that this here thread is for sharing rather than for skeezing requests, but I am in a tight corner as post-move I cannot locate my CD copies of The P0p Gr0up's "She is Beyond Good and Evil" and E1nsturz3nde N3ubauten's "Halber Mensch" (the individual songs) and my turntable is broken at the moment (wah wah). I need to write about those songs for something in a hurry. Can any noizers help a brudda out?

(anyone know what the bananas track is?)

dmr, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

That's the song "The Great Banana Hoax," first track from the Electric Prunes second album "Underground." An amazing album from start to finish, much better than the Too Much to Dream lp.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, this has elements from that song, but seems to be something else.
It's a remix or something.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Or just an extended version? It's cool!

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

the Electric Prunes second album "Underground."

ah thx! I've been looking for that record ... i'll have to keep looking. I just have the axelrod ones (mass in f minor and release of an oath)

those tracks i posted are off of this: http://www.discogs.com/release/961064 .... b3yond the wizards sleeve is erol alkan and another guy making psych-rock edits. I had downloaded some stuff off the first two 12"s and wasnt that impressed but this one is pretty rad.

dmr, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

clu5ter's s0wieso?

69, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

Are you asking or offering? Cause I have it on cd...

(dunno if it's been remastered in the last couple years, mine is the 90's cd edition)

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

69, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

woah, haven't heard that in awhile.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

Water reissued Sowiesoso a few months ago, I see it everywhere -- I hope it does well enough for them to get around to reissuing all those Roedelius albums which have never made it to CD

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

I wunner if it's remastered? The CD i have could sound better.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Water CD is remastered slightly louder than the Sky CD but not different enough. Water version has original cover art, extra pictures, nice essay.

last time a label did a Cluster reissue campaign, they went out of business before they could get to many of the better albums and that was 10 years ago, the reissues are overdue / deserve support

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:37 (eighteen years ago)

Well, hmm, true, mebbe I should just post half the record...

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 17 October 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

do anything you like but you'll be a happier person if anyone scrapes the money together to get selbstportrait vol III / wasser im wind back into print
