K4te, you keep leaving ilx and returning to ilx and leaving ilx and returning to ilx, and I truly am glad you are here (again), I truly am. But it's a bit of a stretch to make a fuss about ppl using your first name on threads like these to determine you are, indeed, the same person.

People sometimes have reasons for wanting their IRL identities obscured online for entirely legitimate reasons that have simply never dawned on you. I am involved in one of those kinds of situations.

This curtain-twitching meta BS is one of the things I find most distasteful about ILX. If you know someone well enough to recognise their taste or posting style, good for you.

But if someone says repeatedly that they don't want their government name used and you keep trying to dig it up, I find *that* really unsettling.

Did it possibly occur to you that I might be involved in some legal shit and your insistence on revealing the truuuuuuth might actually lead to some IRL consequences when all I really want to do is talk about Radiohead b-sides?

it isn't like people here are citing your full name, and your first name is relatively common. i think everyone posting about you on this thread has good intentions and doesn't intend to be hurtful.

Those reasons have dawned on me, though. They dawn on me at least 10 times every single day in these complicated times of work/personal life getting entwined, times of forums and twitter and facebook etc. It's complicated being online, it really is. I know that because my profession prevents me to be myself on twitter, fb etc. This forum is the only safe haven, as I think is what you are getting at.

But I don't think this is about "digging up" one's gov name (well at least it's not for me); however being part of a community like this, I do like to know White Chocolate Cheesecake is Fothering Thomas, or all the aliases before, as I *engaged* with that person - being you - before. And your gov name is the only name that strings those aliases together.

I think I overstepped in a comment on the sandbox. Which is down, and I didn't use even a first name, just referenced something that had been said in the past. If any of this actually entails legally linkable material, I apologize, but I really don't think that is the case.

WCC: it probably didn't occur to them, no. But I have to say that it would be pretty much of a long shot to expect that to occur to anyone who doesn't already know. Problem is that you've used your first name as a display name here before and have previously not minded people using it (I know I have in the past) - so you can't expect people to automatically know not to do so now. And I'm aware that you've asked for it not to be used before, so I'm not saying you're in the wrong at all, just pointing out that not everyone will have seen every post.

Guys: now you are aware, apologise, stop using it, call for a mod to purge those posts? That would be much more constructive than carrying on a theoretical/hypothetical discussion that WCC doesn't want to be involved in - all they want is a change of behaviour!

Frankly, I think I made the mistake of stating an opinion on a sandbox individual's preferences that assumed past information, and was told off for it, possibly rightfully so?
