there's like a subjective aesthetic experience that trumps the actual cultural one, some kind of wacky stage of development

period i. mom's a band musician, so i like Sousa and Rogers & Hammerstein musicals

period ii. I discover jug band LPs in my parents record cabinet, and when they're away from the house I listen to these, tom lehrer, and have strange feelings about the girl on teh cover of Whipped Cream and Other Delights

period iii. i see Blues Brothers and get into blues, but can't find them anywhere so i settle on "raps" b/c they are prevalent and cool

period iv. i move to a mainly white school where raps are "bad", so i pretend to like the same shit everybody likes and end up w/ a gin blossoms t-shirt and sheryl crow pin

period v. i see charlie musselwhite live and remember i like the blues, so i go to a show and everybody is mean and like 'what are you doing here, kid?" so i go home and listen to The Cure pick-of-the-month that my sister got from Columbia house and hates. I fake a knowledge of punk, and convince nobody.

Last time I mention playing Jurassic park in middle school band, but was your version a John Williams suite that segued into schindlers list and then ended on a triumphant rendition of the Indiana jones theme song? That was a weird fucking suite
