i have an annoying little dog who bangs on the screen door all day to get in and out. he poops in the backyard when i am not looking and as a result we have lots of flies. i live in southern california, so the flies are practically a year-round problem. is there any reason i shouldn't buy a magic mesh?

maybe, but with the west nile virus sending untold dozens of californians to the hospital and/or the grave on an annual basis, you need to ask yourself if that's a risk you're really willing to take.

you tried diatomaceous earth yet?

i am going to talk to my landlord about letting the lawn die and planting native grasses and succulents. need to look into diatomaceous earth.

You should consult the suburbs thread for jjjusten's take on "native plants" that I agree with.

mh, Sunday, 11 September 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

(hint: you just refer to whatever starts to grow in your yard when you don't weed it or spray shit on it as "native plants")

mh, Sunday, 11 September 2011 21:10 (fourteen years ago)

but what if invasive species are what grows in your yard

mr peabody (moonship journey to baja), Sunday, 11 September 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

beats me, the only thing that "naturally" grew in my region 200 years about was prairie grass and stuff. everything's invasive!

I do kill thistles though, those things are assholes

mh, Sunday, 11 September 2011 21:27 (fourteen years ago)

there is a lively debate about it for sure

there is a track on the jurassic park OST called "dennis steals the embryo"

over time, as we made our way out of HS and into college, "dennis steals the embryo" became a euphemism for you-know-what

Gus Van Sant's Gerry Blank (Eric H.), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:25 (fourteen years ago)

We played the theme to Jurassic Park in middle school orchestra and we kept coming up with lyrics to it.

"I'm a diiiiinosaur, I'm a diiiiinosaur" was my fave

mh, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:51 (fourteen years ago)

we also played the theme to Jurassic Park in middle school. we weren't that creative, so we just whispered "welcome to...JURASSIC PAAAAAAARK!" and "hold on to your butts" to each other

remember yr man when he's at wooooooooooork (Z S), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

I like the way that Richard Attenborough says 'Die-no-sour' with a weird Southern accent in the film. I had it as my ringtone for a while.

Jurassic Park, Pokeman, Lion King, Space Jam... these are what makes me feel like an old man on ILX sometimes.

I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about as far up as I go.

That and Green Day.

green day is like a decade after TMNT in my memory, even though irl they overlapped

there's like a subjective aesthetic experience that trumps the actual cultural one, some kind of wacky stage of development

period i. mom's a band musician, so i like Sousa and Rogers & Hammerstein musicals

period ii. I discover jug band LPs in my parents record cabinet, and when they're away from the house I listen to these, tom lehrer, and have strange feelings about the girl on teh cover of Whipped Cream and Other Delights

period iii. i see Blues Brothers and get into blues, but can't find them anywhere so i settle on "raps" b/c they are prevalent and cool

period iv. i move to a mainly white school where raps are "bad", so i pretend to like the same shit everybody likes and end up w/ a gin blossoms t-shirt and sheryl crow pin

period v. i see charlie musselwhite live and remember i like the blues, so i go to a show and everybody is mean and like 'what are you doing here, kid?" so i go home and listen to The Cure pick-of-the-month that my sister got from Columbia house and hates. I fake a knowledge of punk, and convince nobody.

Last time I mention playing Jurassic park in middle school band, but was your version a John Williams suite that segued into schindlers list and then ended on a triumphant rendition of the Indiana jones theme song? That was a weird fucking suite

remember yr man when he's at wooooooooooork (Z S), Thursday, 15 September 2011 00:06 (fourteen years ago)

^^^ the kids at my school played that LAST YEAR but it has been rewritten to include the NEW indiana jones music

Probably the most beautiful piece of music ever made!

After reading a lot of comments, i started to get a bit emotional. So much people that have the same feelings about this theme and movie.
