Grim as it sounds, my CPR instructor pointed out that CPR is only rarely effective. Most people who require CPR die anyway. Consequently, you should never worry about hurting the person you are doing hard chest compressions on, or whether you remember how to do it exactly right. Instead, you should consider the recipient to be as good as dead anyway. At best you might extend their viability for a few minutes until you are too exhausted to continue.
