Dammit. One of my friends (close friend's sister) always has to express some concern or shock at the animal videos I post on FB. On the monkey hugging the dog, she commented "But the monkey is wearing a leash." When I posted the video of the monkey riding a piglet, she said something like "OMG that's terrible!"

The thing about that monkey/puppy video is that the puppy is just being a puppy and the monkey is just being a monkey and their natural reactions aren't misaligned so they're friendly w/each other. The puppy wants to play -typical puppy behavior - and the monkey wants to groom the puppy - typical friendly simian behavior.

It's not so much a matter of her being sanctimonious about the welfare of animals so much as having a strange understanding of what might be unpleasant for an animal. I attribute her reaction to the fact that she likes animals, but has never had a pet.
