My words have broken throats
Too ashamed to speak

Afflicted by disease
They are so weak

I'll throw sand in your eye
You need a reason to cry
I'll throw sand in your eye
I need a reason to smile

I went to school to learn
But it didn't work

How do you learn to try
Why can't I?

I need a reason to smile

Taking sides: "W" off Barely Real vs. "WIRD" on The White Birch?

Subquestion for hstencil and possibly Drew... what is the style of composition/school of theory/(predecessors?) for "W"? Because once it's converted into a rock quartet (LG/RG/B/D) it becomes very SLINT sounding.

Dudebros,

Steve, I will listen and think about the differences between those songs. On the gneral subject of Codeine The Band, I went through a period while studying at Oxford and living in a single unit dorm room of listening to the "Barely Real" EP in a ritualized state and staring at the wall and doing nothing in a state of catatonic arrest at least once a day. It induced a state that John Cassian, writing to fourth century monks in his classic religious text "The Institutes" referred to as acedia, a state of melancholic contemplative arrest, described in the ninetieth psalm as "the noonday demon", a mood in which nothing seems possible, nothing seems worth doing, and yet everything is suffused with a kind of crushing, beautiful sublimity.

Steve-

Listening to "W" now. It just sounds like a transcription of catchy, melancholic indie rock guitar parts for piano. I don't hear the space or scale of a Feldman or Wolff New York school contemporary classical piece here. It has me wondering what General MIDI files of Codeine songs would sound like. It's rad, no denying that, and it's a ballsy move, but aside from the oddity of the instrumental choice, as a tune it's got the Codeine-ish fingerprints (a good thing). Do you hear Grubbs quietly humming along in certain places? I think I do, but I might just be going into my crazy place.

Serge Protecteur (nordicskilla), Saturday, 28 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

Drew,

Listen to "W" and then "WIRD" (off of The White Birch). Grubbs plays lead guitar on "WIRD", essentially transcribing his "catchy, melancholic indie rock" piano parts for guitar while Codeine (at this ponit based in Louisville) go for full-on Spiderland mode.

Tim,

At my friend's wedding, I sat at a table with Frank Kozik and Blag Dahlia (neither were invited but were dates of two of the bridesmaids). Blag was very nice and conversant but Frank was just way too cool.

...Codeine (at this ponit based in Louisville)

dude, steve, they were only there for like part of a summer. they were never really "based" in louisville, and i'm pretty sure "the white birch" was recorded elsewhere (don't have it handy).

I checked into that Codeine state of mind again last week with "Barely Real" and "The White Birch" played in sequence. I think "Barely Real" is my favorite record of theirs still, and I'm glad that when I listen to it I am not just listening in order to feel nostalgic about the first time I listened to it. I still can hear the record and not just the mushy-inner-home-movie it triggers. But it was weird that I would just light a candle and stare into the flame and do nothing while that record played. Like church or something.

Anyone catching this round of shows? So psyched (yet equally bummed we don't get BManning as opener).

I missed their last reunion... strangely found out about it at an A's game. As I'm shuffling to my seat I notice the guy next to me was wearing a shirt of theirs and I was like "My man, that was my favorite band in 1991" and he replied "Dude, they played last night at [insert local club here]... you blew it!" haha.
