Kinda tangential, but macaques can recognise their bffs in photos. Juvenile monkeys were fascinated but puzzled by the photographs. They often tried to greet or touch the animal in the image.

honestly feel a bit buzzkillington about that link. his guilty lip raising thing is him bearing his teeth out of feeling threatened. if a dog does that it is going to bite you really soon. doesn't mean its abused just that it feels cornered.

it's all kind of defused by the guy not being overly threatening. but you should never use that kind of punishment on a dog. just give it a command that it understands so it knows what is going on. that's why the dog is so relieved to just get in its crate. /soapbox

While I find that article's assertion dubious (I have come home to a REALLY guilty looking dog and had to search for the offense), I also don't think the teeth-baring is aggressive at all. An expression can mean more than one thing, and along with the timid tale-wag, the downcast gaze, and the squinting, it looks to me like the dog is being submissive and "ingratiating" (that's a little anthropomorphic, but the best term I can think of). It gets drawn out a little, but I would hardly call it mean, much less cruel, and even less abusive.
