they're kinda tough sledding most of the time but they do pay off, my finicky call is the feed-back as the place to start if you like weird beats / kraut-contemporary, the Ed. RZ cd if you like weird free & want to hear AMM/MEV-contemporary

this one's good too

this has to be the worst vinyl rip ever, but the lofiness fits the faux ebm sound nicely.

would like to see a tracklist, I didn't recognize much besides "Moskow Diskow" and Vangelis "Let It Happen"

dmr, Monday, 7 May 2007 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

Eno/Byrne in there, Police-Voices Inside My Head, Pink Project or whatever that Pink Floyd disco thing was, Love of Life Orchestra-Extended Niceties (did he get that from Dream Chimney?),

dan selzer, Monday, 7 May 2007 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm digging the terry riley and bongos stuff.

dan selzer, Monday, 7 May 2007 04:17 (nineteen years ago)

Police-Voices Inside My Head, Pink Project or whatever that Pink Floyd disco thing was

ah right. forgot about "Voices," didn't know what the Pink Floyd thing really was.

can someone hook up the a mix of the original b boys SMiLE ???

chaki, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

I have a 3LP bootleg that I've been meaning to digitize forever

might take a while but now I have some motivation

dmr, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

xpost that's the record that finally convinced me that bang on a can were useless, though I know some people who are into it

beach boys version is the only true SMiLE: http://www.sendspace.com/file/wyiy4o (there are other versions with more extensive outtakes / alt versions but this is one of the attempts at sequencing a listenable album)

mutant sounds has the first Freshly Wrapped Candies album up, first time I've gotten to hear it since a friend of theirs played it for me in a UCSB dorm room in the early 90's, it's still pretty weird and good. delay / loop based / devolved / drony take + Renaldo and the Loaf damage.

http://mutant-sounds.blogspot.com/2007/05/freshly-wrapped-candies-grazing-amongst.html

Milton Parker, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

xpost would love to hear the 3LP version

Milton Parker, Monday, 7 May 2007 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

I'm totally on the fence about full album sharing, but this is a solid contender for the best album I've ever heard and it's completely unavailable anywhere. So here goes:

The Gospel Harmonettes of Demopolis, Alabama

always wanted to hear that...Stereolab used that first one.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 04:24 (nineteen years ago)

ennibody got robyn & the egyptians 'queen elvis' ? it's oop, i think.

remy bean, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 14:35 (nineteen years ago)

(there are other versions with more extensive outtakes / alt versions but this is one of the attempts at sequencing a listenable album)

the 3lp has a lot of unfinished stuff, studio outtakes, works in progress

when I first got the bootleg I made a "sequenced" Smile tape for myself using some of the finished tracks from "Smiley Smile," the real version of Good Vibrations, etc.

but yeah I will try to rip it. it's interesting. and the somewhat lo-fidelity makes it even more intimate. it took me a while to warm up to the 2005 Smile but I like it now too.

(btw side 6 of the bootleg is a bunch of people hanging out in the studio tripping while they left the tape running ... it's titled "Brian's Smile Studio Party" ... I think I've only listened to it once. kinda creepy actually.)

dmr, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:07 (nineteen years ago)

I dl'd a pretty good definitive Smile, using the stuff from the Good Vibrations box set and various bootlegs, it was less of a "here's everything he recorded" and more of a "this is how it would've been released", and is pretty good. But you can get the legit Beach Boys box set and really have like 90% of what would've been the LP, in full fidelity on CD 2.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

the 2004 smile was so...airy? too airy? i dunno, i never connected with it. i should listen again.

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

thanks, milton :)

chaki, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

somethings wrong with surfs up :(

chaki, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah...the remake was an incredible fascimile but something was missing. I could never tell if it was just me being so familiar with the versions from the bb box set.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 8 May 2007 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

argh, yes the 'surfs up' I posted is a glitched out version of the studio version. sorry to propagate that, I'd forgotten, for my CD I just put on the studio version (the one I'm sure you have already)

many of the Smile boots include the brian & piano-only demo, but he's a little tentative with the high note, I usually listen to the later studio version

Milton Parker, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 00:22 (nineteen years ago)

The brian and piano demo is on the box set and it's by far my favorite.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

the fast eddie version of Smile is pretty good, edits together original tracks in the order of the 2004 version

however, I have finally settled on Smiley Smile being my fave BB's record (or really, the Smiley Smile/Wild Honey CD)

somethings wrong with surfs up :(

-- chaki, Tuesday, May 8, 2007 4:31 PM (4 hours ago)

thats not the only fucked up one. the last 3 tracks fade out and the next song begins only to cut off or somthing

i loved wilson's smile until i heard this orig. version of "child is the father of the man" which kills everything

am0n, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 01:29 (nineteen years ago)
