That's not very friendly either, surely? Unless he's just trying to hug the cat.

We had to get rid of a rabbit that was trying to rape our (male) cat when I was little. Apparently this is because we were all rabid sodomites. Hurrah! (It's almost a shame that the Christwire site is a parody, it brought the actual LOLs imagining someone genuinely believing that.)

I'm no cat behavior expert, but that's not going to stop me from acting like one on the internet. I think the cat/pelican interaction is friendly because the cat looks pretty chill. Her tail is down and not puffed up, she's not crouched, her ears are up rather than back on her head, her fur isn't puffed up, and she's tilting her head in the way cats tilt their heads when they like what you're doing to their faces. Pelicans aren't stealthy, so the cat should have had plenty of warning that this big old galoot was coming, so my guess is that the cat was rubbing her face on the pelican's beak, and the pelican opened her mouth and gave the cat's head a little friendly squeeze.

Jenny, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

That cat is clearly cleaning fish guts and stuff from the pelican's beak.

StanM, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

Ah. I think Stan has it.

emil.y, Thursday, 19 August 2010 14:28 (fifteen years ago)

Cat's ears aren't back and his tail's not puffed out - I think they probably know each other.

Good call, Stan. My cat rubs her face all over tasty smelling things in a very similar fashion.

Haha. We'll inject your blood into a cat and inject the cat's blood into a monkey, then inject the monkey's blood into a dog. We'll get to the bottom of this muff-up.

<3 tara and bella. except it makes me sad because elephants are pack animals and a lot of elephants in zoos are kept in solitary confinement.

I did not intentionally quote that post. Which isn't to say I didn't love it! But I think I did some weird iPhone Zing Touch crappola by accident up there. This post is real, however.

I'm really surprised to see two photos of a pelican giving a cat a beaking in my lifetime.

fed a cat to a pelican

Oh, a wondrous bird is the pelican!
His bill holds more than his belican.
He can take in his beak
Enough food for a week.
But I’m darned if I know how the helican.

Dixon Lanier Merritt, Friday, 3 September 2010 05:35 (fifteen years ago)

http://parishofbengeo.com/images/httour/cliff10.jpg

'Pelican in her piety' in heraldry and symbolical art, is a representation of a pelican in the act of wounding her breast in order to nourish her young with her blood a practice fabulously attributed to the bird. The pelican cutting open its own breast represents Christ's death on the cross, and the shedding of his blood to revive us and therefore adopted as a symbol of the Redeemer and of charity. An explanation of this is that the pelican's bill has a crimson red tip and the contrast of this red tip against the white breast probably gave rise to the tradition that the bird tore her own breast to feed her young with her blood.
