Hey Dayo - I think D2 was his real name! It was listed as such on the application and all accompanying materials.
― Aqua Backrat (ENBB), Friday, 4 June 2010 11:15 (sixteen years ago)
haha I was just joshin xp
enbb that's cool! was just asking because it's quite common in some Asian countries for people to give themselves their own English names which are unrelated to their government names
― real eyes realize real truffle fries (dyao), Friday, 4 June 2010 11:17 (sixteen years ago)
Oh yeah, I know. I would say most of our applicants from Asian countries had their real names and then their English names but often those were more along the lines of "Michael" and not D2.

This is how I end up doing business with people named things like "Eagle."

I mean, I don't think Daniel is *that* much more ridiculous than *Eagle*...
"[The Hebrew] God has judged me"... okay...?
― _▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:41 (sixteen years ago)
daniel is my government name, Eagle is not the government name of laurel's asian contact I don't think
― real eyes realize real truffle fries (dyao), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:43 (sixteen years ago)
Daniel is a good name imo, and so is Eagle... but both are pretty ridiculous is all I'm saying.
― _▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)
yeah but what about 'grenade'?
― real eyes realize real truffle fries (dyao), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)
anyway if you read the thread carefully I never even commented specifically on' eagle'. I just mentioned 'hitler' and 'grenade' which I think are self-evidently bad names. (well okay grenade is a pretty kickass name)
― real eyes realize real truffle fries (dyao), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:49 (sixteen years ago)
The point is they are non-name words in our language/culture. I also work with a lot of people who gave themselves real name-y names but uncommon ones, which I find extremely charming, but the words that are not names at all are truly noize.
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:53 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, hitler is NAGN no matter what.
i'm pretty much over reading threads carefully btw, it's mostly just skimming while i'm on the phone or the toilet tbqh.
― _▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
it goes both ways though, like when western people give themselves asian names that come phonetically close to their western names but don't really mean anything in that language
I know a lot of people here for example whose english names are just the closest name phonetically to their chinese names. like there are a ton of wincy's and winky's because wing sze seems to be a pretty common Chinese name.
― real eyes realize real truffle fries (dyao), Friday, 4 June 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)
also interesting how a lot of korean-americans are named eunice or eugene or euclid or whatever since I think yoo is a pretty common phoneme in korean? names are interesting, what can I say.

Popularity of the male name DanielYear of birth Rank2009 72008 52007 52006 62005 72004 72003 82002 102001 92000 9Note: Rank 1 is the most popular, rank 2 is the next most popular, and so forth. Name data are from Social Security card applications for births that occurred in the United States.
The thing I like about names using Chinese characters (China, Japan, ?) is that there is a poetry in the characters that adds depth far beyond the sound of the name. Seems more two dimensional then non-Chinese language names.

I think every Eugenie I've known (can think of 4 off the top of my head) has been from Hong Kong. Does it sound close to something in Cantonese? Just wondering.
(quick spy: first few pages of Google results for Eugenies on Facebook are 80-90% French, a couple of Koreans, and the rest Chinese, though I've no idea what part of China)
