Stevie,

I'm a big guy who just wants some simple but nice looking jeans. Willing to spend around $100 for a good pair, but I'm not sure I can put up with any crazy washing routine. Is this doable or am I expecting too much out of life?

Sincerely,
Me

catty (jeff), Friday, 30 April 2010 07:28 (sixteen years ago)

uniqlo makes the nicest jeans you can find for around $70 USD. if that's too much, cheap mondays or levi's 501XXs will work in a pinch.

Oh man, I LOVE Uniqlo!! I haven't picked up a pair of their jeans yet but several people have told me their selvedges are the cream of the crop of affordable denim. The sour smell is getting better; I don't mind it at all really. And I was told they'd shrink ~5%, so I bought ones that fit me snugly in the dressing room, and they've since streched out a teeny bit while wearing, and so I think they should shrink down to normal size when (if!) I wash them. I have the bad, bad habit of buying jeans that fit "just right" in the store, and after 3 days of wearing them I need a belt. All of my jeans require belts (except my new H&M raw denim ones!)

Oh boy, sleep! That's where I'm Ann Reinking! (Stevie D), Sunday, 2 May 2010 14:39 (sixteen years ago)

am currently breaking in a pair of uniqlo raw denim right now. as I've lost a little weight since I bought them I'm thinking I should have waited to size down even more :/

Well it's a really straight cover leaving no room for interpretation, although the production is more 00s (HRDC smooshing the freqs all together). The singer (Chico? Chito?) is a little flat and doesn't range as well as Rick, esp going into the screams. I am impressed by the replication of the telecaster brightness/chime-yness. But other than that, seems like karaoke... why even record this, just save it and insert it into a live set and make a couple geezers happy.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:26 (sixteen years ago)

The press copy seems to disagree:

The band pays homage to one of their influences by treating the song like a precious Faberge egg that they smash into a million pieces and set on fire in a classic Deftones style.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i've got to go with BUZZNET here, before even reading that i was listening and thinking to myself "hrmm this sounds not unlike many tiny pieces of very expensive eggs, set aflame," didn't quite detect the Fabergé influence but i was on the right track ya know

iiiijjjj, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)

am0n, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 16:48 (sixteen years ago)

dear steve of shasta,

why is tempura served with that funky, almost tasteless dipping sauce? why would you ruin tempura by making it soggy? what's that grated clear stuff you mix into the sauce? why don't the japanese use something tastier instead, like bbq sauce or motor oil?

yours,
dayo

retarded candle burning at both ends (dyao), Sunday, 16 May 2010 14:20 (sixteen years ago)

not sure what you mean about tasteless! maybe its just subtle and not in yo face like bbq sauce but there's definite flavor, esp that classic "umami" sensation that mystified and confused food bloggers everywhere in 2008.

grated stuff = daikon oroshi = grated daikon, for texture and also for digestion aid when eating fried foods.

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 16 May 2010 14:47 (sixteen years ago)

pls to explain umami

contenderizer, Friday, 21 May 2010 06:20 (sixteen years ago)

This article does a pretty good job at it, I linked it from some ILX thread talking about misconceptions about umami a while back:

dyao, Thursday, 17 June 2010 04:27 (fifteen years ago)

price.

go to your local japanese grocery and ask them for "hon-soba".

_▂▅▇█▓▒░◕‿‿◕░▒▓█▇▅▂_ (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 17 June 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

I went to two japanese supermarkets yesterday and only one of them had 100% buckwheat. about $6 for 200g iirc. bought another packet that was 88% buckwheat. :(

dyao, Thursday, 17 June 2010 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, it's expensive... is there a japantown in HK? maybe there is a dude who makes his own fresh nodles that you can buy? that may be cheaper...? ymmv...

600 grams of chips for men and 300 grams for ladies (haitch), Thursday, 17 June 2010 04:42 (fifteen years ago)

dyao: Juuwari (十割, 100%) soba, the finest (and usually most expensive) variety, consists entirely of buckwheat. hon-soba just means "real, true soba"... juuwari is more common though.

haitch, i know a guy named Buck Wyland, what do you think of that!

Dear Steve Shasta,

Don't really have a question here but I'm reading William Gibson's new book "Zero History" and it revolves around the hunt for a "secret brand" of Japanese denim so it made me want to bump a Steve Shasta thread.

Peace!

dmr, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah he's really into it, he shops at Self Edge in SF so much that they started doing collabs with him.

Nope, any good?

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 January 2011 18:05 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I haven't been to a Japanese place like that in ages.

Please fetishize responsibly (Michael White), Monday, 3 January 2011 20:49 (fifteen years ago)

Jp food in SF is generally pretty ass. The "best" places are pretty average/mediocre compared to LA/NYC/HNL or hey Japan! where I'm more likely to go eat it.

I kinda gave up on it a few years ago. Seems every week a new shitty fusion ramen shop opens up to much blog fanfare... shruggles.

ah, thanks for reminding me that I should go and eat some amazing Japanese food for lunch today

My top 3 for 2010:

1) Benu. Next level. Ridiculous.
2) Frances. MP goes downmarket but kills it.
3) flour + water. My Wed nite carbo load.

I've only been to Frances amongst those, but it's kind of endearing to get a Christmas card from a restaurant.

Kappou Gomi is a local Richmond place serving plausible Kappou. It's cheap but not bad at all. I agree about LA or NY having better stuff generally and I avoided stuff I could easily get elsewhere. The gf's dad and stepmom have spent a lot of time in Japan and they thought it was pretty good, too; perfect for a dinner on a cold Sunday.

That said, I will give these a try. Thanks for the tip.

this is probably really stupid, but is there a trick to getting rid of a crease like this in a fly other than just attacking the jeans with an iron? these are regular 501xx.

yes, xp. obviously i'll take them off before attacking them with an iron.

caek, Friday, 11 March 2011 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

That is a fly piece that is "gaping". If it really bothers you, take it to a tailor and have them move the top button out a bit to even the tension on the fly piece. For the cost of a needle and thread, you can sew a "tack" (small pleat) on the underside of the fly piece as well but it might take a couple tries to get it right.
